Rene Mejia shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Rene, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Who are you learning from right now?
i am learning a lot from myself right now. i know this might sound weird to say but sometimes we get so caught up in things like work, friends, society or relationships that we don’t pause and realize the things that we can learn from specific situations and the lessons that life is trying to teach you from it.
i have changed so much from the beginning of the year to now, i have been forced to let go of things that i though and hoped were going to be forever and unfortunately that was not the reality. The reality is that you only have you at the end of the day and if you don’t learn to take care of yourself no one will do it for you.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Rene Mejia, i live in south Florida. i am originally from El Salvador but have been living in the USA for 19 years. I am a fashion designer for my own brand which is my name, i specialize on creating contemporary pieces, most recently i presented a swim wear collection at Miami swim week in July. I also presented in El Paseo Fashion week in march. in the past i have done shows in Miami, Argentina as well as Paris.
I recently release my first handbag as well as an eyeshadow pallet, two more handbags are being released soon as well. I am currently working on a collection that will most likely be presented in February next year.
My brand is for the person who likes to be fashion forward and be elegant at the same time. I grab inspirations from everywhere sometimes i see a shadow and it reminds me of a silhouette or i see a wall paper and i automatically have to recreated in my own way which was the case of the Space Toile de Jouy that i created for my collection for paris fashion week, as i like to see skin as walls that shelter us like a house and i wanted to decorate them which at the time i was very inspired by the idea of the future and travel and the memories that i have of watching the night sky in el salvador and see all the stars light up at night. The most beautiful thing i have ever seen.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
This is actually a very loaded question for me. As a child i knew i had the drive, The motivations, The creativity to achieve something great but at the same time i knew that the environment that i was around was not going to let me be what i wanted to be. Living in a country that was murder capital of the world which el salvador was at the time that i lived there i saw no hope for me and this might sound crazy because as a 10 year old kid i saw everything that was happening and it was scary. Just last week my therapist asked me a similar question about what i believed that would have happened to me if i would have stayed in the country and my answer is that i would most likely be dead.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
what i would say to my younger self is “is ok everything is going to work out”
I remember this when i walked out on the runway after my Paris fashion show. The amount of emotions that were involved to take those steps on the runway was unbelievable. My grandma has passed away the same day that i was flying out of Miami and i remember not being able to sleep on that 12 hour flight because i was crying my eyes out knowing that i will never see this person again, feeling like i was being selfish for taking the flight and not canceling everything and going to her funeral instead. i felt powerless and this has happened before where you have to work countless hours and hours to create something and im not complaining because i do like to do what i do, i don’t think i can ever stop designing but sometimes people only see the cool post on Instagram about my collection being in Vogue, Elle or glamour magazine but behind all that there’s been times that life has hit me in the face back and forth and have had so many “no’s” and you just have to dust yourself back up and tell yourself that everything is going to work out.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I believe that everyone i meet or don’t meet has a very different view of me or who they think i am due to whatever circumstances we meet or what ever you see online. Ive been told that i have a bad case of R.B.F. (you look that up) and that i look unapproachable but in reality i feel like i am approachable i like to laugh and smile and have a great time, i love to make people laugh but i dont know if the public social media version of myself says that about me.
The truth is that in the age of social media everyone is curating their life to be perfect and everything is beautiful and we love and pray and care for everyone. Everyone believes that posting a picture is going to change the world. which is not me i would much rather work on a cause i care about and not post about it than do something just to make people see that im doing something good just for likes, That is not me.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I don’t know if i want to regret not doing something. If i have learn anything in my life so far is that we do not know how much longer we have on earth, so do the thing you want to do. I dont know if i have some major life regrets in my life so far as least none that i can think of right now but i think they key to not having many regrets is also planning just in case you do the thing you want to do and it does wrong, if plan A doesn’t work Plan B comes in and if that doesn’t work what’s Plan C and so on. You will never be this young and this healthy in your life again so go do it.
