We recently had the chance to connect with René Romero Schuler and have shared our conversation below.
René , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Wow that’s a hard one to answer! My current attention is on getting really strong pieces done for my two upcoming shows, so I kind of stay “in the zone” and just try and stay super connected to each piece. It’s a fun part of my process and I really stay grounded when I’m so hyperfocused.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is René Romero Schuler and I am an abstract figurative painter and sculptor, working in Monterey, California. I show with galleries internationally, and stay pretty busy with shows and events, in addition to a very dedicated studio practice. I think what makes what I do interesting is my focus on female figures in my work. My perspective on my own life and experiences comes through a very feminine lens, and that strongly influences what I do, but I also want to honor the women of the world and remind us all that we are worth honoring. This comes through in my work in the texture, the color palettes, the overt femininity, the whimsy and playfulness, the strength and the confidence. I love what I do so much!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Does anyone really see me clearly? I think I’m more of an enigma…but maybe my sons, Ian and Owen. I think our children can see through all of our bullshit, right?
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are stronger than you know.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Community. I love building and connecting relationships and nurturing those and all I love and care about.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Oh goodness, if I wasn’t born to do this, I really could not even begin to explain why I want to create every single day. Being an artist is so clearly in my genetic code. I just can’t NOT do what I do-—whether I’m any good at it or not!
