Renee Jones on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Renee Jones shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Renee, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I brew some tea and take my dog for a walk. He’s still young, so a good walk in the morning gives us both exercise, a little social interaction, and a good start to the day. I listen to helpful books and podcasts to focus my heart and mind.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Renée Jones—a coach, speaker, and former chaplain—helping busy professionals who can handle everything except their relationship with food finally find peace with it.

After years in counseling and chaplaincy, I saw the same story play out again and again: smart, capable people who could meet every deadline but felt powerless around the pantry. For most, the problem wasn’t food—it was how they used it for relief, comfort, or reward.

My work blends neuroscience, emotional awareness, and gentle accountability to help clients break free from emotional eating and the exhausting diet cycle. It’s not about more willpower—it’s about healing the patterns that drive it all.

What makes my approach unique is its compassion. I’ve lived it myself, lost the weight, and kept it off for more than a decade. I know what it takes to make peace with food—and with yourself.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. Woods, saw something in me I couldn’t yet see in myself. After reading one of my essays, she wrote in the margin, “You have a flair for writing.” Such a small sentence—but it lit something inside me. From then on, I had a sense of who I could be. Writing became my way of making sense of the world—how I learned, researched, and eventually, how I connected with others. Even now, every time I sit down to write or speak, I think of her gentle nudge. One kind comment changed the way I saw myself—and quietly shaped everything that came after.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could speak to my younger self, I’d say: Stop trying so hard to blend in. You don’t need to disappear to be loved. Growing up, I often felt out of step, different from everyone else. But those very differences shaped who I am—curious, tender, and deeply aware of the needs of others. Your heart is good, your quirks are gifts, and the very things that feel like “oddities” now will one day help you connect, lead, and heal. You are enough—exactly as you are.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The diet industry loves to tell us we just need more willpower, the perfect plan, or a magic shortcut. The truth? That’s a lie—one that keeps people trapped in shame, frustration, and the endless cycle of emotional eating. No pill, potion, powder, or fad can fix what’s really going on. Real change comes when you stop fighting yourself, learn to respond to your emotions, and focus on nourishing your body and your mind. When that happens, everything else—including weight—tends to fall into place naturally.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I was told to be a teacher—a “safe” profession, respectable, particularly for a woman. And, I am a teacher every day—but not quite the way they imagined. My classroom? Coaching sessions, workshops, and talks, guiding people to see themselves clearly and make real changes. I still get to share knowledge, inspire growth, and make a difference in ways that reach people where they are.
