There is actually a gene that encodes for thrill seeking. Once I took a scuba, diving continuing Ed course with Duke medical school and divers Alert net work, and there was a group of 30 doctors who are all Thrillseekers. When I was 14, the choir Director, let me play guitar and sing with a group on stage for a performance, but would not give me a solo. I turned the microphone up from the guitar to my voice and stole the solo. When I was 18 I jumped out of an airplane, twice. When I was 23 I started scuba diving. and when I was 31 I began purchasing and starting businesses. When I was 45, I started dancing tango. All of these “risks“, are actually seeking thrills. I was never afraid of failure, but I was afraid of success. Now I’m not really afraid of anything other than dying. Read More>>

Comfort breeds complacency. I’ve always been taught that if you aren’t where you want to be – there’s no reason to be stagnant in your motion. As I streamlined Fortunate LifeStyle, I found myself always trying to prioritize personal growth & development, which inevitably comes with taking risks. In order to establish comfort, you have to get uncomfortable. In 2017, I had to leave my comfort zone of Indiana to travel bi-monthly to Georgia to meet and connect with influencers, artists and labels to promote my brand. Paying money out of pocket for travel, garments, stay, and much more, twice a month as a college student working part-time was not the most fiscally or personally responsible decision – However, the financial and physical barriers of traveling South only proved to be the catalyzing factors for my passion. Taking risks means to me, embracing the unknown, being open to new possibilities and challenging yourself while stepping out your comfort zone. When you are pushing boundaries you learn more about yourself, you gain confidence in your decision making and helps you with life challenges. Everything you have is from making decisions, and that is why taking risks to me now does not feel like a liability. From my own experiences, I have developed a sense of purpose in who I am and who I want to be, by wanting more and believing in myself is always a priority. Read More>>

It takes risks to develop your artistic senses. A lot of time, failure, and experimentation is what I have learned the most from in my studio practice. I find success when a painting is just about to fail and then I can discover something. For myself it is a practice that takes place after certain amount of trials, and those trials create the presence of the painting. In a way the construction of the painting has to pass through an inner conflict that can only be embraced on the canvas, and by embracing that conflict it creates the existence of the painting. The most beautiful meanings of life are sometimes best understood by struggles. For me, success in life is simply trying to do and live from what one loves. Every future moment is uncertain in art and in life. Read More>>

I am naturally inclined to avoid risk so I have to actively force myself to take those chances. As I have grown, this has become a bit easier because I think about all the things that can happen if I succeed at that risky thing vs not trying at all. 9 times out of 10, the anticipated outcome is worth it and I don’t enjoy the feeling of “should’ve, would’ve, could’ve” it just doesn’t sit right with me in my spirit. From a business aspect, in terms of the non-profit, if we don’t take risks, try new things, we may miss an opportunity to not only fill a need but also an opportunity for us as an organization to grow and further our goals. I grew up doing what I was told, doing what was expected of me, never trying to push boundaries or be uncomfortable. I started to question that way of living when I got my first job working full time for a bank shortly after graduating from college. I had obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, which I pursued at the recommendation of my father. It’s not that he forced it on me or anything, but I just didn’t know what else I would want to try. I was good at Finance, but I never particularly felt passionate about it. Then, once I started working at the bank, I realized this was not something I could see myself doing my whole life. Taking risk is like second nature for me. In the grit-etched heart of the neighborhood where I grew up (Inglewood, California), risk wasn’t an option – it was a daily reality. The rough corners of the city became my classroom, teaching me a kind of calculus most never had to deal with. I learned to weigh risk in the heartbeat silence between a question asked and a decision made.
Risk is not its own entity, I simply integrated it, let it become part of my soul, a guide rather than a deterrent. Decisions were made based on a complex matrix of survival, ambition, courage, and hope, all intertwined in a knot that didn’t have room for fear as a standalone factor. The fear was there, of course, always present. But it didn’t influence me, it didn’t paralyze me. I walked hand in hand with it, recognized it, but didn’t allow it to control me. Read More>>

Since I was a kid, I always like to stand out even though I am a shy person. honesty when I was kid people had a habit of talking me out of my ideas and sadly sometimes, I would let them. once i graduated high school that’s when I started to realize if i hadn’t listened to these people i would’ve been accomplished more early on. i use all the doubt from my childhood as fuel to take risk. I’m really a whatever happen gone happen type of person. if it doesn’t work out then move on to something else. i don’t like to feel “comfortable” cause when i do i know its times to take on another risk. it may sound crazy but taking risks is the best part about running a business, Read More>>

I simply would tell myself “if not now then when?” And “do it, even if you’re scared .. what’s the worst that can happen.” Talking to myself, and giving myself pep talks really helps me take the risk. My family’s words of encouragement are a big help in all the risks I’ve ever taken. Read More>>
