Robyn Ivy shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Robyn, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I love this question, because I have been building a morning routine for myself over the past month. After spending a year taking care of my family, I had to get back to myself. Every morning I wake up and make some tea, do my best not to look at my phone, sit down on the floor to stretch, then write for about 30minutes to get any intrusive thoughts out of the way. After that I like to take a short walk. Doing all this really lays a foundation for the rest of my day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an artist in transition. I used to work exclusively on digital art, but found myself getting bored, so I started experimenting with some abstract art, but didn’t have much time for it. A little over a year ago I had to move home to take care of my parents. I put most of my stuff, including my computer, in storage. Without it I couldn’t do the very detailed digital pieces that everyone knew me for. I decided to embrace it and dove into drawing with ink- something I’ve always been nervous to do, because you can’t erase your mistakes. I was reminded of something my 5th grade teacher Mr. Allen would say- it’s better to write in ink because you’re more intentional with what you put down on the page. He was talking about writing, not art, but it held true for me. I love drawing in ink now.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Art has always made me feel powerful. I’ve been drawing since I was a kid. I’ll never forget when I drew a horse in pre-school, all the kids gathered around, amazed by my work. A few even asked if I could draw one for them. That was the moment that made me realize how powerful art was and how powerful I felt being an artist.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Never stop producing. Even if you don’t like what you’re drawing today, it could lead to a breakthrough tomorrow. Talent may be important, but it’s nothing without consistency.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I really admire Maya Angelou. I read two of her autobiographies in high school and they really changed my perspective. She taught me that you don’t have to let your struggles define you, but they can build your character and make you a better person.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Late nights, sitting at my desk, drawing. I don’t feel any greater peace than when I’m creating something I love.
