Roy, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have recently started wood working and building home goods.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Roy Saunders, I am a musician currently base out of Gatlinburg, TN. I am originally from Georgia just outside of Atlanta. My Promotional company that i work with Promotion LLC is based out of Knoxville so it made sense to move home base up to Tennessee. I do however still tour and play in the Atlanta area as well. My original music is more so geared to a newer Outlaw Country sound. i originally started playing music in a band with my brother Ryan Saunders called “11th Night” around the Atlanta area in 2012. From there i moved to Savannah Georgia in 2013 and formed the band “Escaping Fate” with lead guitar player Jay Morelock until 2016. Playing around South Georgia, North Florida, and the Low Country of South Carolina. After moving back to Atlanta in 2016 I started out on my solo music journey touring the South East. in 2019 I added Tom Dickenson and percussion, harmonica, and backing vocals. With the Dou formed we hit the studio in 2019 putting out our first single “Stranger” with Jay Morelock on lead guitar, and Steven Saunders on bass. From there we have since put out 7 more songs.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
I come from a line of musicians with my father and his father playing both professionally. i think that i soaked up as much as i could from them and that molded my drive and work.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I took a year off back in 2016 and didn’t think that I was going to play again. But, the void I felt not playing music was too much and I know I needed to play and start back up.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I would have to say loyalty and respect
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I feel that i am doing what I was born to do. I didn’t start playing music until I was 21. I went to culinary school after high school and planned on life as a chef. Once i started playing and gigging out i knew that the feeling i get from it is what i was born to do.
