We recently had the chance to connect with Sarah Grandchamp and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Who are you learning from right now?
Truthfully, our clients. Every shoot is so vastly different that I come away each time with something new to bring to the next one. Maybe it’s a new prompt to initiate the perfect shot, a new technique or pose they asked me to try, or we stumble on something together that I think others would benefit from as well.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sarah Grandchamp and I am one half of the Sepia Sisters. I’m still and always have been self-taught. I aspire to shoot what inspires me which is why I don’t specialize in anything – I don’t want to limit myself and say “I’m a wedding photographer” or “I’m a concert photographer”. I enjoy my ability to be flexible in my approach and style. I sometimes go from shooting a live hardcore concert to a newborn baby session the next day and the thrill of capturing those moments is just as good as the other and I love how it widens my portfolio to be more unique and diverse.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandparents and both of my parents. My grandparents owned and operated a dairy farm and were very much the embodiment of the working class. Being raised by a single mom in rural Vermont also meant that there was always chores to be done. My dad at one point owned and operated his own recycling plant and furniture making business. I was put to work at a young age which taught me to never be afraid of getting my hands dirty and to be independent so I think it was in the cards for me to own my own business at some point in my life.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I’ve always been afraid that my art isn’t cool or unique enough to be worthy of hiring me. To some degree that will be true, but I also learned to come into my own style and that I do have an audience and clientele that I work for and my style is always evolving.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you need the most expensive and the best equipment. Passion shows through lenses more then money does.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
As soon as I finish editing all of my weddings after peak season.
