Sean Kosofsky of NYC Baby on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Sean Kosofsky and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Sean, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up, weigh myself (on a diet lately). Then I have a glass of Metamucil and then Coffee!
I immediately start checking notifications and listening to podcasts while I enjoy my coffee. Within 30 minutes I am dressed and in the gym or having a jog.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the Nonprofit Fixer. I fix nonprofits. I have worked in and with nonprofits for 34+ years. I am now an executive coach for nonprofit leaders, but I also help nonprofits with fundraising and board development.

What makes my practice special is the depth and variety of experiences I’ve had and the problems I’ve solved. I served as the CEO of 5 separate nonprofits and on many boards. I have helped many political campaigns and ballot measures and love the advocacy side of causes. I am a no-nonsense person who tells clients like it is. I speak clearly and simply abut how to solve problems and hopefully make complex things easy to understand.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I was only 21 years old and I nearly passed a law in the Michigan legislature. It was then that I knew one person could make a difference and impact policy.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Body image. Shame. I am not even heavy and still body image issues seem to dominate my liminting beliefs. Intellectually, I know the negative thoughts are not true, yet they arise!!

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. I can admire dress, attire, makeup and the like, but when it comes to authenticity, what you see is what you get. I won’t be multiple things to multiple people. Love me or not, I speak plainly.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I had a chance to get a free masters degree at Princeton. I passed it up out of fear of not working for 9 months. I was dumb!
