Sierra Gomez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Sierra, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of art, lifting weights has been my favorite form of self-care and self-expression. For me, there is a physical and mental cohesion. Fitness clears my mind and gives me energy, which I bring back to my creative work with new focus. The discipline I practice in the studio—patience, consistency, and embracing the process—mirrors the mindset I take with me into a workout. It’s become a reminder that creativity doesn’t only happen with a brush or a pen. Sometimes it shows up in the way we challenge ourselves, and carve out time for what makes us feel alive. Art is my primary creative outlet…somewhere to explore emotion, imagination and self-expression. Fitness is my physical release.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sierra Gomez, and I am a artist/illustrator with a broad style portfolio, specializing in horror; I love creating creepy, atmospheric works filled with skulls, eyeballs, and all things eerie. My art leans into the weird and the macabre.
Whatever the project, my goal is always the same: to create something that sticks with you long after you’ve looked at it.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Honestly…I think I was trying to be the best version of myself that would appeal to others, rather than being my most authentic self. When I was younger, I was so worried about how others viewed me and if I was making my family proud. Now, I can live my life being completely true to my core principles due to caring less about others’ opinions. In the same way, I am now more genuinely expressive when it comes to creating my art. I realized that the artwork I created for myself was being recognized more than the art I created in an academic setting. My wacky, interesting pieces that I create for fun are the ones most reflective of me, and…surprisingly…these are the works that most often generate the greatest attention and make it into the high-end galleries.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Ooooh…The fear of rejection or judgement, definitely. Most artists want their work to move people on some level, to resonate. So how an audience may react can be important. My own insecurities often held me back because I wasn’t confident in how my work would be perceived. So in turn I wasn’t always confident with my artwork. Once I was able to overcome that fear and not be so anxious over criticism, I was finally able to produce art I was proud of, and that resonated with both me, and with a wider range of different people.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Almost to a fault! Much like my art, I’m a work in progress; always changing and evolving, sometimes a bit of mess, sometimes reaching for better. Although a lot of my artwork is creepy and dark, as a person, I can be very outgoing and friendly when you get to know me. I am always very upfront and honest with myself and the people I meet. I take pride in being able to be unapologetically myself.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Whenever I am in my flowing creative space. Specifically, when I create my own projects or am following a current Muse. I feel the most content when I’m deadline free, just moving within my own passions and timelines for a project. Feeling no pressure while just bringing my crazy inspirations to life is extremely rewarding. I really get into the whole process…from creating a sketch to seeing the finished product come to life. All aspects of the undertaking…from helping something new emerge on canvas, as well as seeing people being inspired by my artwork…are fulfilling. I always hope my work will inspire others to have fun and find their own creative spark. I always say “dare to be creative, then create your future.”
