Stacy Heitman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Stacy , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
I’ve recently made the effort to be more relaxed throughout the day. I do this by waking up by 7am, enjoying my coffee, looking at my daily schedule and catching up with my husband. My health is very important to me, pilates and weight training help me stay at my best. After a long day, I like to wind down by cooking at home and going for a late night walk.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I am Stacy Heitman, a celebrity hair colorist based in Los Angeles and Denver. I have worked behind the chair for 20 years at prominent salons. I have a reputation for creating stunning, timeless hair color for each client that sits in my chair. I take great pride in making my clients feel confident, current and beautiful.
I have continued my education by taking color classes throughout the years to keep up with trends and techniques.
My work has been featured in top publications such as Elle, Vogue, and Allure, along with several movie and television shows.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I started my color apprenticeship program when I finished cosmetology school. I mentored a senior colorist at a salon in Beverly Hills. He taught me a lot about color theory, application and how the salon business works. He told me to never stop learning and keep track of my daily services. I learned a lot from him and still use his techniques in my everyday life now.
Today I work with many different stylists and colorists from all over the world. I love “the team” aspect of the industry. I like to surround myself with coworkers who inspire, create and continue to help me grow,
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Challenging times and mistakes can make for great learning opportunities.
When I was in my early twenties, I joined a booth rental salon. I didn’t really have a clientele at that time and social media wasn’t a thing. It was the wrong career move for me. I worked there for nearly two years, got myself into debt and was thinking about moving back to my home state to save money.
Luckily I have very supportive parents who helped me out. I made the decision to go back to a commission salon and rebuild my clientele. Starting over was the best thing I could have done for my career. I invested in my education and focused on my craft. I learned a lot from my mistakes and worked super hard to get myself to where I am today. As Warren Buffet has said, “the best investment you can make is in yourself.”
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I believe my closest friends would say that life experiences and relationships are what I value the most in life. I like to keep my friend group small. We meet up monthly over dinner to catch up and have a good time. My family and friends give me the motivation to be the best version of myself.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
A coworker asked me to cover for him and color his long term celebrity client. She was one of my favorite artists. When I arrived to her house she was inviting and kind. All my nervous energy disappeared. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my career to this day.
