Stephanie Mazzeo on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Stephanie Mazzeo and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Stephanie, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Absolutely, I would hire myself without hesitation. With over 30 years of hands-on experience in film, TV, commercials, music videos, bridal, and SFX makeup, including challenging gigs like special effects for an episode of the HBO series “It’s Florida, Man”, I’ve proven I deliver high-quality, long-lasting results under pressure. I’m reliable, adaptable, always prepared (kit packed, passport ready for travel), quick to respond, and deeply passionate about enhancing every client’s vision. My track record speaks for itself: I bring professionalism, creativity, and a commitment to excellence that consistently exceeds expectations. Why wouldn’t I?

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Stephanie Mazzeo, a professional makeup artist with over 30 years of experience in the industry. I specialize in film, television, commercials, music videos, bridal, and special effects makeup; everything from flawless beauty looks to gore and character transformations.

What I do is help bring visions to life, whether it’s enhancing natural beauty for a bride on her big day or creating immersive, durable effects that hold up under hot lights and long shooting hours. My approach is all about precision, creativity, and reliability. I show up prepared, adaptable, and ready to collaborate.

What sets me apart is my versatility and longevity in a fast-paced industry. I’ve built a career on consistency, quick problem-solving, and a genuine passion for making people look and feel their best. I’m always expanding my kit and skills, and I’m currently open to exciting new projects in film, TV, and events.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bonds between people is often a breakdown in trust, communication, or empathy; things like betrayal, unspoken resentments, judgment, or simply taking each other for granted over time. In my 30 years working closely with clients, actors, brides, and teams, I’ve seen how ego, stress, or misaligned expectations can quietly erode even strong connections.

What restores them is vulnerability, honest conversation, and genuine effort to understand the other person’s perspective. A sincere apology, active listening, or showing up consistently with kindness can rebuild bridges faster than we think. In makeup, I often create safe spaces where people open up – sometimes a bridal party heals old rifts just by laughing and talking while I work. Relationships thrive when we choose empathy and presence over being right. It’s never too late to repair a bond if both sides are willing.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Hey, younger Steph – slow down and trust yourself more. You’ve got an incredible instinct for this craft, and every “no,” late night, or tough gig is building something lasting. Stop doubting your worth or comparing your path to others; you’re exactly where you need to be, and the best is still ahead. Be kinder to yourself – you’re doing better than you think. Keep going; it’s all going to be worth it.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public version of me is very much the real me. What you see is what you get. I’m professional, positive, and passionate in my work because that’s genuinely who I am, not a persona I put on for bookings or social media. I love what I do, I care deeply about my clients, and I’m naturally enthusiastic about creating beauty and transformation.

That said, like anyone, I have private sides; moments of doubt, fatigue after long shoots, or quiet days where I’m recharging. Those aren’t hidden because I’m fake; they’re just personal. The “public” Stephanie is the authentic core: reliable, creative, warm, and fully committed. I’ve been in this industry for over 30 years by being real, not by performing a role. People hire me because they feel that sincerity, and that’s something I’ll never fake.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say: “Stephanie was the real deal – a makeup artist who showed up with skill, heart, and total reliability for over three decades. She made everyone feel beautiful and seen, whether it was a nervous bride, an actor under hot lights, or a horror character needing gore that lasted all night. She was kind, professional, and passionate until the end, always lifting others up and bringing creativity to every job. Working with her felt easy because she genuinely cared. She left every face, and every set, a little better than she found it.”

That’s the legacy I’d be proud of.
