We’ve shared some incredible stories of resilience below that we hope will help you on your journey towards building up your resilience.

My resilience came from my mother. I came from a survivor. I watched her overcome many things and just be “different.” She wanted more for her family, so she worked for it. She showed us what hard work and determination could do. She was no quitter, and we lived a very good life because of her. Being a single mother made me ramp that up by 3! I wanted a good life for my children, so I made it happen. I have my own goals. I reach for the stars and come back with them! I do not take no for an answer. I may be redirected, but it always works out for the best. I have accomplished things I set out to do but am not done. Read More>>

I have not always been a dream chaser. For a long time I have wasted years wishing my life away on my closet dreams and talent of being a writer. There was always that voice in my head telling my I was not good enough. Now that voice did not get there by itself, somewhere along the road of my life I have been told this, why I chose to hold on to it I do not know. We are told so many things along the way that we chose to let go of but those words “You are not good enough” whether said, implied, or we THINK they are implied or thought, we hold on to, makes no sense really. I would have to say that resilience has always been one of my strongest qualities that I owe to my mother. I have always known her to withstand and recover quickly from her difficulties through life.

This is a good question I am a 44-year-old black woman who decided that I did not want to be put in the box and I did not want to be silenced so we started one voice radio for a while. We were doing different events around the state of Missouri and so we decided you know what we needed a bigger space to where we can highlight different artists throughout the city, not just throughout the city but throughout the state of the world. So we decided that we would open black Charlie’s which is a social bar where people can come and highlight their talent Read More>>

My resilience come from within. It was something I was blessed with. The ability to perform in a borderline OCD mindset with a singular focus to get the task to completion. Ever since a little child I’ve been this way. I remember one day my grandfather speaking to my siblings and cousins about me one morning at the breakfast table. I can still hear his voice “If ever have a job and I need someone to do it, I’m going to give it to Marcus. That boy has been in the backyard next to the garage every single morning working on that bike. Read More>>

Albert Einstein said, “the only true failure is when you stop trying.” My whole life has been a series of struggles, it definitely hasn’t been easy, but I knew I could never stop trying. From surviving domestic abuse and being homeless and living in my car at the age of 26. Now at the age of 31, I have not one, but two successful and continuously growing businesses and the life I prayed and dreamed for. I owe it all to my resilience and determination to never give up. I wake up every day and I am grateful for the experiences, both the good and the bad. Read More>>

I gain my resilience from the simple fact of having no choice. It’s a harsh reality that not only I but many other black women face; which is having the weight of the world on our shoulders. I wasn’t allowed to have days off or time to complain. I grew up the baby of 4 however, during my childhood my mother faced a host of medical issues that resulted in me not necessarily being allowed a childhood due to taking care of her everyday. Growing up on the vibrant streets of Africa, my resilience was shaped by the rhythm of life around me. From the bustling markets to the tight-knit communities, I learned to adapt and find strength in the face of adversity. My passion for DJing and the pulsating beats of music culture became my refuge, teaching me that just like mixing tracks, life’s challenges could be blended into something beautiful. The energy of the music mirrored my determination, and I drew inspiration from the harmony of melodies, echoing the harmony I sought in my own life. Read More>>

My resilience is a culmination of my mother,/ancestors, trauma, and stories, specifically fiction. I’m the only person of color in the family I was raised in. I’m the middle child and the only openly queer one. I’ve been different since day one. My mother is white/dutch South African, so there is a huge socio-political cultural undertone to her being a single a mother in the USA raising 7 children: 6 white & 1 brown, on what could only be described as poor families attempt at hippy homestead in the forest. A deep dive into my life reveals I get my resilience from a few areas. My Mom raised 4 kids on her own. We watched her persevere regardless of the obstacles that came our way. Her example here taught me resilience. My Mom is a woman of faith that is deeply grounded in God. I learned about faith from watching her. My faith in God gives me resilience and assurance God is my provider and my defender. My Mom loved us and disciplined us. Her quick, loving discipline taught me self-discipline. My self-discipline gives me the resilience I need to stay positive and to keep moving forward. Read More>>
