Story & Lesson Highlights with Andrea Michaelson

We recently had the chance to connect with Andrea Michaelson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
cooking for people I care about brings me joy, the execution, and the joy of eating something special and delicious that I make, espescially currently as I have had to make a gluten free adjustment to my diet.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have a background education in Architecture and Environmental design. In that regard, the foundational design of all things that are in the environment prepared me to look globally at the same time closely at everything from packaging and lettering, to full scale interior architecture as well.
My brand included some tiles, custom furnishings, interiors, and for myself I just built a ground up residence.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
real life and work experiences with many years of reflection.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
There have been quite a few wounds because I am older now, so they have accumulated. I have learned to dream a little, trust my instincs.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
THe biggest misconception is about editorial content. I think most magazines are selling out to sell covers and have forgotten about representing themselves with a perspective. Young designers forget that as well, to be true to themselves and their design filter.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I have always given my best to a fault. I have spent many more hours then have been compensated for in my years of design work, because ultimately I have wanted to delight my client and to satisfy myself.

What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
