Story & Lesson Highlights with Angela Taylor of Idaho

We recently had the chance to connect with Angela Taylor and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Angela, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Both of the two most recent moments that have made me feel proud involve my novel, “Late Night Kiss.” It’s the second book in my romantic comedy series, “The Kiss Club.” First off, Romance Reveal Book Box requested to include it in their book boxes. It was sent out to one thousand of their subscribers, which was amazing and makes me giddy just thinking about people opening their boxes and finding it inside. And second, “Late Night Kiss” just made it into the finals of The Kindle Book Review’s “Best of Indie Awards” in the romance category. The winners will be announced on November 1st, so keep your fingers crossed!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an independent romance author specializing in steamy, frisky, fun contemporary romance. My books always include plenty of humor and heat and are stuffed full of snarky banter. Hopefully, when you read them, you’ll feel like you’re hanging out with the characters and sitting in on their conversations.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, I believed the fairytale: I’d grow up, get married, have 2.5 children and a white picket fence. My expectation was that things were going to be easy and magically happen exactly the way I pictured. Boy, was I wrong! Yes, I’m married, and I have two stepdaughters and four furry children, but our fence is made of pole rails and is desperately in need of some TLC. Also, turns out, life isn’t easy. Adulting is a lot of hard work, and there have been some super high highs and some very low lows along the way. All you can do is enjoy and make the most of what you have, and create your own personalized fairytale.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me that I’m one strong, stubborn, resilient person, even during the times it doesn’t feel like that’s true.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
For better or worse, the answer is yes. As a reader, I always love when it feels like I get little glimpses into who my favorite authors truly are. It makes me relate to them and feel a connection, no matter how small it may be. I don’t want to put on a front for my readers because I feel it’s only fair for them to get to know the real me. They’ll either appreciate it and hopefully feel a bond with me, like I do with them, or they’ll think to themselves, “this chick is nuts” and move on.

Sometimes I wonder if I should hold back a little…filter more thoughts and try to be more “officially professional” in my Facebook reader’s group and in-person interactions. Keep everything book related and steer clear of personal stuff. Dress up and wear a blazer and pressed slacks to book signings. But you know what? I’d feel like I was cheating. I don’t want to deceive or mislead my readers. So, I talk about my personal life along with book related things, and I wear jeans, a T-shirt, and my Walmart tie-dye tennis shoes to signings. I’m just me. Hopefully, they’ll be able to relate to my dry, sometimes silly sense of humor and laid-back style and appreciate the fact I’ll always be upfront and transparent with them.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I think I’m doing what I was born to do. For a good chunk of my life, I worked at jobs I couldn’t care less about or downright despised. A couple I didn’t mind, and I actually loved working at the animal shelter when I did that, but the majority were spent counting the hours until I could escape at the end of the day and get back to living. Writing is my happy place. I not only get to live free from jobs that dragged me down, but I also get to create wonderful new worlds and characters that I love. It’s like the joy you felt playing Barbies as a kid, only now I get to play for the rest of my life… except it’s with stories that are way more fun and a lot steamier.
