Anthony Campney shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Anthony, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Films and novels. There are often times that certain stories grab my attention and move me with their themes and characters in ways I didn’t know I needed.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Anthony Campney, and I am an author, a comic book writer and artist, and a graphic designer. On top of my personal projects – including my independent sci-fi/western comic Red Frontier – I complete requested art pinups, marketing graphics, business logos and many other forms of design on commission. I was born in New Hampshire and initially raised in New Jersey before moving to Texas where I have lived nearly thirty years now. Most of that time has been in San Antonio, but I initially lived on the border in the town of Eagle Pass. These living experiences plus some traveling have formed my worldview and interest in a myriad of perspectives and cultural influences. I enjoy exploring these varied influences through the art I produce and the stories I write.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
It’s not a very clear memory now, but I can recall being asked to draw posters for events at my school when I was in first grade. Through most of my childhood I rarely felt like I was good at anything…except Art. Until I was about ten years old, when I began to discover some aptitude in writing, drawing and art in general felt like the only things I could do well that distinguished me from others in a good way.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Not so much a time and sporadic moments, primarily during the first ten years or so of my oldest daughter’s life. It began to feel as though still believing I could make something of my creative talents and dreams was antithetical to being a responsible father, for multiple reasons. I did a lot of reading on manifesting and shifting my perspective toward a more positive mentality to keep the fire lit.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
This will sound like I’m trying to score brownie points at home, but that would be my wife. She maintains a calm serenity most days that helps me work through my anxieties and hang-ups before she’s even said a word. And that’s not something she had to do deliberately, it’s just the way she is.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I would love to last as an example of kindness, conviction, and reason. I think people’s La-sew in those three elements – most times unintentionally – are the prime sources of the misery much of the world is facing these days. I try to do what I can to- especially in my creative work – to bring some mitigation to that, however small in the grand scheme.
