Story & Lesson Highlights with Arlene M of Hudson Valley

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Arlene M. Check out our conversation below.

Arlene, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Definitely painting! I’m never in a rush, I just stay in the moment ad I don’t think of anything else

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Arlene and I’m an alcohol ink artist. What is that? Alcohol ink art is a vibrant, fluid art form that uses highly pigmented, fast-drying inks suspended in alcohol. The inks are applied to nonporous surfaces—such as synthetic papers (like Yupo), ceramic tiles, glass, or metal—so they can move and blend freely without soaking in.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My art break through moment came when I was a teen. My mother told me I needed a hobby, so I saw a Mickey Mouse Photo Album and thought to myself I think I can draw that. And to my surprise it look so similar!! That was the start of my art journey! Thanks mom!

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
My husband and I have been married 18 years and he truly understands me. He knows how to help me when I doubt myself about my art journey. My biggest cheerleader!

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you have to go to art school to be a real artist. No way! There’s natural ability that just can’t be thought.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Not putting myself out there
