Story & Lesson Highlights with Barbara Gerhaeuser Shining Souls

We recently had the chance to connect with Barbara Gerhaeuser Shining Souls and have shared our conversation below.

Barbara, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I am most proud of building—though it often goes unseen—is a deep inner bridge between universal energy and grounded human life on Earth.
From early on, I felt a calling to awaken souls to higher awareness while remaining fully present and embodied. For me, this means remembering that we are souls having a human experience, inseparably connected to nature and to all living beings. Every being on this planet carries consciousness, and we are all linked through our energy fields.
More and more people are beginning to realize that we are not limited to our roles, identities, or stories—we are far more than that. My lifelong connection with horses has become a key part of this understanding. Horses play a profound role in supporting humanity’s evolution. Their heart field is scientifically measured to be about fifteen times larger than that of a human, creating a powerful space in which people can naturally reconnect with their own hearts.
Honestly, I must say that I feel a deep sense of gratitude towards horses. They are our mirrors, our teachers and our best friends, and they are always patiently waiting for us to make progress.

In my work as a riding coach, I integrate this energetic awareness in a very practical way. Even without any spiritual background, my students feel the difference immediately. They become more present, more balanced, and more connected—both to themselves and to their horses. This inner shift quietly transforms their riding fundamentals and their overall way of being.
What makes me most proud is that this work happens beneath the surface. It doesn’t need to be named or explained—it is felt.
With the upcoming Year of the Horse, I believe this heart-centered energy will become even more important, not only in our work with horses, but in how we navigate our everyday lives.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Barbara, the founder of Shining Souls and Riding.Shining Souls. I’ve spent most of my life in the saddle—as a professional competitor and trainer. At the height of my career, I rode in the regional dressage team up to Grand Prix level with horses I had trained myself.
My mission is to guide riders into deep alignment—with themselves and their horses. Through balance, alignment, and flexibility, I help them rediscover the joy, trust, and freedom that make riding a true partnership.
I’m not just a coach—I’m a bridge between riders and their horses, creating connections that transform how they ride, communicate, and live.

Over the past two decades, I have immersed myself in shamanic studies and spiritual practices, learning to read the energetic and emotional layers of the human being, and how nature’s forces restore balance and harmony. Guided by remarkable teachers and mentors, I discovered not only healing for myself, but also a deeper understanding of life, purpose, and our place on Earth.
Today, I weave these paths together—horsemanship, shamanism, and spiritual coaching—to guide others back to themselves. Whether they are a rider seeking deeper harmony with their horse, or an individual longing for healing and realignment, my mission is to help them release old patterns, reconnect with your essence, and step into a life of clarity, peace, and light.

I founded Shining Souls as a sacred space where humans with horses can transform—emotionally, energetically, and spiritually. When we open our hearts and expand our consciousness, we not only heal ourselves, but we also help restore balance on Earth.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
A part of me that has fully served its purpose—and that I am consciously releasing—is the belief that my value is measured by constant striving.
Earlier in my life, I was deeply immersed in the corporate world and in conventional definitions of success: higher, faster, wider, better. Like many people, I carried the idea that money and achievement were the ultimate drivers of life. Along with that came an unconscious pattern of taking responsibility not only for myself, but for everyone and everything around me. While this taught me resilience and leadership, it also slowly disconnected me from my true essence.
A turning point came when I met a shaman who became my teacher and mentor. Through this guidance—together with the profound lessons offered by my horses—I was introduced to the energetic realm while staying deeply grounded in everyday life. This combination helped me remember who I am beyond roles, performance, and expectations.
What I am releasing now is the need to overact, overachieve, and push against my own soul’s rhythm. I no longer measure success by exhaustion or sacrifice, but by alignment, presence, and authenticity.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me how to truly listen—something success never required of me.
My deepest suffering came with the sudden loss of a very special horse, one with whom I shared a profound soul connection. One night, everything changed. His passing was unexpected, and the grief was overwhelming.
Yet that loss became both an ending and a beginning. Grief stripped away all certainty and control and opened a space where I could no longer rely on technique, ambition, or performance. Instead, I was invited to look beyond the physical aspects of riding and into a deeper way of relating.
Through that experience, I was guided toward energy work, shamanism, and the subtle, non-verbal language that connects humans and horses on emotional and energetic levels. This path reshaped not only my work, but my understanding of presence, connection, and trust.
Success has taught me how to achieve. Suffering taught me how to feel—and how to listen with my heart.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am deeply committed to reminding people how to reconnect with their true essence—no matter how long that journey takes.
I believe that when we explore our inner world and listen to our soul, we rediscover excitement, purpose, and meaning in life. Inner balance opens the path to freedom and harmony. Through alignment, we step out of reaction and become conscious creators of our lives rather than passive participants.
I am equally committed to honoring the physical body as its own intelligent universe. When we learn to listen to and respect it, we not only heal ourselves, but also contribute to the healing of our planet. Personal responsibility and collective well-being are inseparable.
Beyond individual transformation, I strongly believe in building communities rooted in trust, respect, and mutual support. Moving away from separation and competition toward connection is essential—not just for our personal growth, but for the future of humanity.
This is work I am committed to for a lifetime.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
What I understand deeply is that reality exists beyond what we can see or physically touch.
Many people say, “I only believe what I can see.” Yet even a simple question—How big is the universe?—reveals the limits of that belief. We know it is endless, but the moment we try to define endless, we step beyond the physical and into the unseen. Whether we name it energy, consciousness, or spirituality, it is already shaping our lives.
I understand that we are far more than our physical bodies. We also have an energetic body, and when we begin to recognize it and learn its language, we gain a deeper way of communicating—with ourselves, with others, and with life itself.
On this level, I see two equally real dimensions: life on planet Earth, governed by duality, and the universal field, governed by unity, light, and love. When we become conscious of both realities and learn to honor their different laws, separation dissolves and we begin to perceive life as a whole.
This awareness naturally leads us back to the heart—the seat of the soul—and from there, to a deeper sense of oneness and belonging.
