Story & Lesson Highlights with Dave Tourjé

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dave Tourjé. Check out our conversation below.

Dave, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
.Ha! A “normal” day for me is pretty “abnormal” I think. Because I’m involved in many art forms, I’ll jump around from working on a film project to practicing guitar to mapping out a new show to designing a new piece of furniture. And it goes on…

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My main area of interest is and has been my work with the California Locos which includes the influential artists Chaz Bojorquez, John Van Hamersveld, Norton Wisdom and Gary Wong. In that regard, a feature length film is in the works, future art shows, new brand and merch plans. Working with the Locos nonstop since 2011 has transformed my approach to my art and art career and has been a profound inspiration.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I was about three years old when John F. Kennedy was killed and I remember it very clearly. I walked into the dark and smoky livingroom (my dad smoked) to see my mom and dad crying. The sound of Walter Cronkite’s voice narrated the somber national disaster. I looked at the TV to see the horse-drawn casket and I somehow knew things would never be the same again. And I was right.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Struggle teaches you persistence and strength. Suffering teaches you humility and gratefulness. Success teaches you the power of possibility.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
As an idea, the California Locos transcends artworld struggles and has become more of a movement which is very satisfying to be a part of. The downside is that there are never any guarantees and you have to keep your eye on the mountain and just keep going no matter what. It has been much tougher than when I made art and sold it for income as a career ideal. It’s a long game that challenges your willingness every day, but I’ve decided it’s what must be done for me, so I keep going!

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes, to be honest, I achieved a good level of selling my art back in the ’80s and through the ’90s. But it wasn’t what I “signed up for” so I went in the direction of culture while making my art. This led to my founding the Chouinard Foundation and the California Locos.
