We’re looking forward to introducing you to Debjit Mukherjee. Check out our conversation below.
Debjit, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m walking a very intentional path — not wandering. Every step I take is guided by purpose, clarity, and a long-term vision. I don’t believe in drifting or waiting for direction to appear on its own. I set clear goals, I pursue them with discipline, and I adjust my strategy when needed, but never the destination. My journey has been shaped by deliberate choices, continuous learning, and the drive to create meaningful impact. I’m not just moving forward — I’m moving forward with intention, direction, and determination.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My background is a unique blend of technical expertise and business acumen, rooted in my education and professional experiences.
• Technical Foundation: I began my educational career with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communications Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology, graduating in August 2017. This provided me with a strong technical base, which I applied early on as an Automation Intern at Siemens Building Technologies and an Automation Engineer at General Electric Company (2017-2019). At GE, I focused on automation and SCADA systems.
• Business Intelligence & Strategy: I strategically transitioned into the business domain by earning a master’s in business administration (MBA – Business Analytics) from the New York Institute of Technology in June 2021, followed by an associate in business Intelligence from Harvard Business School in November 2021. This led me to roles focused on data analytics and business strategy.
• Current Role: Today, I am a results-driven Senior Consultant at Deloitte, where I leverage tools like Tableau, Power BI, and SAP BO to develop advanced reports and dashboards. I am skilled in transforming complex datasets into actionable intelligence, and my work includes supporting OBIA development using SSIS, performing exploratory data analysis using SQL on up to 3 million new daily records, and designing ETL workflows.
My journey is about bridging the gap between technical solutions and business needs to ensure efficient and aligned outcomes.
Most Significant Milestone or Accomplishment:
While the resume lists several accomplishments, a few stand out as particularly significant milestones:
• Recognition and Leadership: Receiving the Business Elite’s Under 30 Recipient, USA (2025) and the Global Recognition Award Recipient, USA (2025) are major public acknowledgments of professional impact. Furthermore, serving as the President of the Emerging Leaders Council, NYIT (since 2022) demonstrates sustained leadership and influence.
• Impact on Efficiency: During my time as a Business Analyst at the New York Institute of Technology, I implemented CRM enhancements that optimize $30K annually through budget allocation and resource tracking.
• Technical Automation: As an Automation Engineer at General Electric Company, I completed automation of functional and regression testing for more than 500 PMUS. In my current role at Deloitte, I am also noted for creating automation on Excel (VBA and Pivot) to increase efficiency and handle more than 2 million raw data.
These milestones highlight a consistent ability to drive financial impact, lead teams, and implement technical solutions for efficiency.
Industry Transformation and Role:
I see the Business Intelligence and Data Analytics industry rapidly transforming due to the increasing volume and complexity of data, pushing the boundaries of traditional BI.
• Industry Transformation: The industry is moving towards more predictive and prescriptive analytics, focusing on transforming complex datasets into actionable intelligence that truly drives decision-making, not just reporting. There’s also an increased emphasis on seamless data integration (ETL/SSIS) and real-time data availability.
• My Role in Evolution: My role, and the role of my organization, is to be at the forefront of this evolution. My current work already involves developing advanced Tableau reports in integration with IBM data studio & Oracle database, supporting OBIA development using SSIS, and performing high-volume exploratory data analysis (up to 3 million new records daily). I aim to play a central role in:
• Driving Strategy: Continually translating complex data into visually engaging presentations and insights to support strategic initiatives.
• Optimizing Operations: Leveraging my skills in Power BI, Tableau, and data modeling to optimize operations and uncover new opportunities.
• Maintaining Excellence: Ensuring seamless business operations through production support and managing issue tracking via tools like JIRA and SharePoint.
Key Message/Advice to Aspiring Professionals:
The key message I would share with aspiring leaders and professionals striving to create an impact is to cultivate a dual-focused mindset: technical expertise balanced with business empathy.
Bridge the Gap: My personal journey and profile emphasize the proven ability to bridge the gap between technical solutions & business needs, ensuring efficient & aligned outcomes across stakeholders. Technical skills like SQL, Python, and Tableau are essential, but they only create impact when they directly solve a business problem or drive a strategic goal.
Data-Driven Leadership: Be passionate about leveraging data not just for reporting, but to optimize operations, uncover opportunities, and support organizational growth. Aspiring leaders must understand that data is the language of modern strategy.
Continuous Development: Finally, commit to continuous growth, as evidenced by professional development in areas like Six Sigma, Strategic Management, and Brand Management.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was someone driven by curiosity, creativity, and a genuine desire to stand out of the crowd. I was a kid who asked ‘why’ more than anything else — not to challenge people, but to understand the world around me. I was bold, imaginative, unafraid to dream big, and unashamed of taking the unconventional route. Over time, expectations and responsibilities shaped me, but at my core, I’m still that person: curious, analytical, and driven by a deep need to build, improve, and create impact. The world may have refined me — but it never replaced who I truly am.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me things success never could. It taught me humility — the understanding that strength isn’t loud, it’s quiet and relentless. It taught me resilience — not the Instagram version, but the kind where you get up even when no one is watching. It taught me patience, perspective, and the ability to sit with discomfort without breaking. Success can validate you, but suffering transforms you. It strips away ego, reveals your true character, and forces you to grow in ways comfort never will. My toughest moments didn’t just teach me how to survive — they taught me how to build a deeper, stronger, more grounded version of myself.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that hard work alone was enough — that if you put your head down, stayed disciplined, and delivered results, everything else would fall into place. Looking back, that belief was a bit naïve. Hard work matters, but so do relationships, timing, visibility, and the courage to speak up for yourself. I learned that you can’t just grind quietly and expect the world to notice. You have to advocate for your ideas, build the right network, and be intentional about how you show up. My mindset shifted from ‘work hard and hope’ to ‘work smart, be strategic, and create opportunities instead of waiting for them.’
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I was someone who showed up — for my work, for my dreams, and, most importantly, for the people I loved. I hope they remember me as someone who lifted others, who led with integrity, who didn’t just chase success but created impact. I want them to say that I never forgot where I came from, that I honored the sacrifices of my parents, and that I loved my partner with loyalty and depth. If people tell the story of a person who worked hard, stayed kind, stayed curious, and made life a little better for the ones around him — that’s the legacy I hope to leave behind.
