Story & Lesson Highlights with Deece Casillas

Deece Casillas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Deece, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Get outside with my dogs for a few mins, read while I drink coffee, then stretch. Pretty habitual about all this.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a writer and internationally touring stand-up comedian. I dedicated my life to cultivating my passions, and ensuring that my day-to-day life could be spent on the things I truly love. My goal is to spread laughter through my comedy, and write character driven stories, about hard topics, that resonate with the people most in need.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother. She passed away when I was 10, and I only saw her handful of times, but she always made sure to let me know how important my creativity was and how much she loved the things I wrote, even as a child.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Resiliency. Life is hard, and mostly suffering, but we have agency in how we utilize that, whether we internalize or externalize it, and how we grow from it.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Industry, any industry, will encourage you to sellout and create for the algorithm (read: the masses, popularity, zeitgeist, etc.), when all that is just ephemeral fads, with no stability, gravity, and completely manufactured and disingenuous. Any reinforcement you receive from that will be hollow and fleeting

Create what you love, create what you believe in, not what you think people will love.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Eating salads. C’mon… wings every day, if we’re on the clock – who cares?

What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?

Growth often means stepping into what once scared us. The things we resist can become
