Story & Lesson Highlights with Disnie Sebastien

We recently had the chance to connect with Disnie Sebastien and have shared our conversation below.

Disnie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Who are you learning from right now?
I recently turned 30 and I consider that a new and exciting chapter of life, even though the current state of the universe doesn’t seem thrilling. I am currently on a journey of learning from myself, learning who I am and what makes Disnie Disnie. This year is about self-discovery and trusting myself and intuition implicitly. That way I can continue to grow and be the best possible version of myself. I want that energy to radiate through everything that I do, especially in my Art! May the best opportunities come my way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Jane of all acting trades. I have a passion for performing anywhere, the stage, on-camera, you name it, I want to be involved! I have a flare for TV hosting as well. My most well-known TV gig being a regular host on Amazon Live’s Shopping Channel for many years. Named, Sunday Funday with Disnie, each episode is filled with my sarcasm and witty humor. Clips are available on my Tik Tok @disniems. Other credits include video shoots for Google, MTV and Target.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Dear Mom and best friend has been my biggest supporter from birth. She always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. In her eyes there was nothing I couldn’t do. I am grateful for that type of encouragement and motivation. Coming from the Caribbean Island of Dominica, the career paths were usually Doctor, Lawyer or Teacher. When I was a teen, I told my Mom I wanted to move to NYC to pursue acting with zero experience, she didn’t even question it. She smiled lovingly and said, “You will be a very successful Artist!” Fast forward to 2025, I am still in awe of my accomplishments, I have had the opportunity to work with my favorite actress of all time, Keke Palmer as well as major brands. Mom was right. I did it! Mom always had a way with words, knowing the right things to say and an incredible ability to understand human beings deeply.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I am a major introvert. Always have been as a child. It’s something that I still really struggle with today as well as self-confidence. Of course, I picked the most public field to work in as an Actor. Haha! As a child I never believed I was good enough or beautiful or smart enough. I was so much in my shell. My Mom really did try to encourage me. She always said, “Even if you don’t feel confident, don’t show it, pretend!” I wish I could go back and hug that little girl and tell her she would be making big moves in the US and would be loved by many. Today, I receive lots of compliments and often find people tend to gravitate towards me and that little girl in my head sometimes feels, “Why me?” When I’m acting, I get to release all of my inhibitions and not overthink. That’s a big reason why I love being an Actor. 2025 and beyond has to be a year of self-discovery and acceptance. I have made a lot of progress!

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Probably Dogs! Haha. If you know me, you should know I am an animal lover. I grew up with over 200 dogs in my backyard in the Caribbean. Not an exaggeration! One thing I loved about home was the space to roam around and having a big house compared to the shoebox apartments available for rent in NYC. Fortunately for me, my Mom and Grandfather loved dogs too and as soon as I held up a puppy to their face begging to keep them, they gave in. I learned that trick pretty quickly! Who could resist a cute puppy face? I would want to keep every stray I saw as a child and this is how my family ended up with so many dogs. Since I was an introverted child without any siblings in the house, my love for animals only grew. They are so sweet, patient and loving unlike some humans frankly. The world could use some more care and love right now. We can learn a lot from animals by observing them. What stuck with me about my own pets was how free they were, so joyful and uninhibited, not caring what other animals think about them. I’m finally at a point in my life where I actually don’t care about people’s opinions as long as I am happy with myself. This doesn’t mean I am not open to suggestions or ideas however. My Mom would agree with this philosophy. While my busy NYC lifestyle doesn’t allow me to have a pet, I still live vicariously through other’s pets. That means I will probably ask to say hello to any dog I see on the street!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
As much as I have a passion for the Arts, I’m not only doing it for myself but really for the people of my country, Dominica. It is often confused with the Dominican Republic and I’m hoping to change that one day. There are very few people from Dominica who pursue Acting as a career and I want to put my country on the Map. I want Dominicans to be very proud of me. I have embarked on a unique journey that I hope inspires anyone from my island and beyond to follow their dreams. I really hope to be remembered as a successful Dominican Actress with a cool name, Disnie!
