We recently had the chance to connect with Garytylaa and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Garytylaa, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Who are you learning from right now?
Who am I learning from right now? Honestly, myself… and old Kid Cudi interviews
Back in 2008, Kid Cudi was the definition of resilience. He came into the game as an outsider — not the industry favorite, not the radio darling — but with a vision that was raw and honest. Dropping A Kid Named Cudi when nobody was checking for him, he turned vulnerability into his strength, and that’s what shifted culture. He was the underdog, yet he stayed true to himself and carved out a lane that didn’t exist before.
I relate to that heavy. At 27, looking back at everything I’ve done, I realize I’ve always been the underdog too. Nothing was ever handed, nothing came easy. But like Cudi, it’s that resilience — betting on myself, trusting my own voice — that keeps me moving forward.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Garytylaa is a cultural voice, media personality, and storyteller who lives at the intersection of sneakers, music, fashion, and authentic conversation. What separates him is his belief in the power of storytelling — not just as entertainment, but as a way to preserve culture, inspire perspective, and connect people.
As the founder and host of NoUglyChicksPod, Garytylaa is on a mission to keep storytelling alive in podcast culture. In a time when quick takes and surface-level content dominate, he dives deeper — pulling out raw, unfiltered narratives around sports, culture, love, and life’s struggles. Each conversation is more than an interview; it’s a story that reflects resilience, humor, and humanity.
At 27, Garytylaa embodies the underdog spirit: self-taught, self-driven, and always learning from both his own journey and the cultural figures who came before him. His voice resonates with a generation that values originality, authenticity, and the timeless art of a story well told.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
“I was alone, and I felt like an anomaly. Being a gay Black man growing up in South Florida can really make you feel small — but realizing how big the world is can help make things feel better.”
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there were times I almost gave up — moments where I felt invisible and out of place — but those same feelings of being the underdog are what pushed me to keep going.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
“The person I admire most for their character, not their power, is Nipsey Hussle. It wasn’t just about his music or his fame — it was what he stood for. He believed in building community, giving back, and creating opportunities for others, all while staying true to his values. He had substance and integrity, and he used his influence to uplift people rather than just to gain more power. That’s the kind of character I respect and try to learn from in my own life
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely, I do things for me, not for gratification
