Story & Lesson Highlights with Hoodoo Jim of Brooklyn

We recently had the chance to connect with Hoodoo Jim and have shared our conversation below.

Hoodoo, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Lately, after I wake up I go to the gym, grab some coffee, come home and play Bass Guitar, maybe make some techno. I like to make time to read in the park and practice mindfulness. If there’s some good music playing that night, I may go to a show or a party. I like to feel the energy of sound and other people. I’m also planning on moving to Berlin at some point in the near future, working on getting more consistent practicing my German.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hoodoo Jim isn’t a brand, he’s me. I don’t have anything to sell you. I’m a passionate artist who still respects the craft of music production. I am unique in the sounds I create, taking influence from music cultures all over the world, and with the rise of AI imitations I find it more important than ever to emphasize human creation and inspiration.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I saw this movie recently called SLC Punk. It’s essentially about growing up and how rebelling and angst can only take you so far. I related to this message because in my earlier years, I definitely felt that angst. It was actually really motivating, but after a point it can be more of a distraction than anything. I’m still the same person, but my approach has changed when it comes to music, relationships, life. Another point made by that movie is, you can do much more damage from inside of the system than from outside.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
One of the wounds is the abandonment issues I received from my father. He was never really around, in and out of jail, so this has affected my relationships and given me trust issues. I’m still working on it.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Totally. I hate being public to be honest, so I can’t even fake it. Everything is a different part of me when I can gather the energy to share it.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’ve never really been good at doing what I was told. The only explanation for my obsession over music must be I was born for it.
