JoLee, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
As soon as I wake up, I connect silently with the Divine One. I often ask for help with whatever will evolve throughout the day.

Then, in no particular order, I dress, have a fruit smoothie, check emails, and meditate. I like to vary the routine a bit. During my half-hour to one-hour of quiet time, I clear my energy field by setting my chakras, body, and aura at a color in the rainbow (like blue), and a vibration (like playfulness or gratitude). Meanwhile, I ask the Divine One, my Spirit, and guides to heal whatever needs a tune-up as I relax and breathe.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Yes, for 25 years I’ve given intuitive readings for people and their pets. With people, I always intend to help strengthen their communication with their own Soul. During readings, I follow an open format. A person may choose to focus on improving their relationships with others, with themselves, with their career, with their life purpose, or with divinity. Or they may have other requests. I just go with the flow to be of service to them.

With pets, I serve as an interpreter for an animal’s thoughts and feelings to convey to their people. I also negotiate challenging situations and offer the pet healing.

As a child, I was highly attuned to people, pets, and the natural world. I just “knew” things that others apparently didn’t, like someone’s mood or a good spot to catch sight of a herd of deer.

Spending a week or two at my grandparents’ Kansas farm every summer allowed for friendships with dogs, cats, cows, chickens, rabbits, fireflies, and coyotes. I especially loved Pepper, a quiet, calm Shetland/Quarterhorse. I rode him until he told me he was ready to retire. I thought everyone had these abilities to intuit energy with people and communicate with animals.

In my 20s I worked for a bank. Then I became a writer, often exploring nature themes. Yet my inner quest for more spiritual understanding of my gifts tugged at me. At 42, I found myself delving into a three-year clairvoyant and healing program at Psychic Horizons Center in Boulder, Colorado. psychichorizonscenter.org It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. During this time, I gave hundreds of intuitive readings for people. In one of our classes we also connected with pets. I had no idea that talking with furry and feathered creatures could develop into a profession! Soon after I became an intuitive for people and an animal communicator.

I also teach a four-month Animal Communication and Healing course twice a year — https://www.psychichorizonscenter.org/product/animal-healing-and-communication/ And my most recent 2-hour workshop was “Who Are You As Spirit?” The students met their own Spirit/Soul, the very essence of themselves that transcends body and mind. They also learned about their soul purpose.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
The first person who recognized me as a Spirit in my body was Tom Jacobs, a meditation teacher and former Benedictine monk in Kansas City, Missouri. I remember arriving at my first class with him, my body rigid and my breath shallow. I couldn’t believe how nervous I was! Tom’s sparkling eyes, steady gaze, and ready laughter helped calm me down. Over time, I found that meditation soothed me. For the next few months, sitting on my low, wooden prayer stool for 15 minutes each morning, and then both morning and evening, a deep peace surfaced from within. If I ever missed a practice, I noticed that I was more edgy.

A year later, I summoned the courage to attend one of Tom’s three-hour, silent retreats. At the end, relieved that my prayer stool and I had made it through, I greeted Tom without words. He seemed to peer into my very soul. Then he spoke earnestly to encourage me on my spiritual path. I’ll always remember our encounter.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
By far my most challenging time in life followed the sudden death of my beloved horse, Joy, my companion for eight years. Rescued at the age of seven, she slowly learned to trust me as I gently haltered her and taught her to stop when I halted. After a couple of years, we bonded so deeply that our energies became one. My best part of each day was spending an hour with her at the barn. Then at 15, she transitioned into Spirit.

For me, grief, depression, and a spotty will to live ensued. As I recovered through therapy, I began a profound healing journey around childhood trauma that took many years to integrate. I’m forever grateful to Joy for sharing her life with me and for opening the door for me to become more whole after she departed.

Through my struggles, I also gained greater compassion for others who suffer, especially those who have lost a close pet companion or who had difficulties growing up.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Great question! I think most of us know that love is real. I also believe in the incredible power of forgiveness, though I can’t prove it. As an adult, I think this is the most meaningful gift I can give myself and those around me. My initial attempt to forgive began at 37 after my father died. When I was 15, he divorced my mother and our relationship became difficult. I held rage, blame, and harsh judgments toward him, though I never spoke with him about my feelings. In fact, we only saw each other briefly a few times a year, and later more rarely.

Once he had moved into the spirit world, I longed to free myself of the angry gripping in my belly whenever I thought of him. And so I began the slow process of forgiveness for my own benefit, not for his. It has taken many years. Eventually, my love for him returned. I trust that my forgiveness has benefitted him as well.

Forgiving my dad and others felt so good that I began a daily practice of forgiveness. I now pardon drivers who cut me off, repair people who have to reschedule, and friends who don’t have time to chat when I need them. I still choose not to engage with some people and I set clear boundaries with others. Yet in my heart, I know, but can’t prove, that forgiving everyone and everything each day brings me inner freedom that does not seem possible in any other way.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
Seeking inner peace has been a life-long quest for me, as I imagine it is for many people. Nature has always evoked peacefulness within me. I walk most days, sometimes for only 10 minutes, to connect with a pond, the sky, stones. If I’m lucky, I’ll see a deer. Have you ever communed with a tree? When I acknowledge a tree’s essence, I sense that its spirit sends me rays of joy. It’s delightful! This energy exchange brings me deep peace.

I also discover peace by going within to engage with my inner divinity, something we all have, through meditation. This quiet time harmonizes me with the Divine and my Soul’s truth. I trust that the more peaceful I am internally, the more tranquility I’m able to bring to the world.
