Story & Lesson Highlights with Jon Echols of Northeast, Washington D.C.

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jon Echols. Check out our conversation below.

Jon, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
The most recent moments that I’ve reflected on that makes me both laugh and proud is how far myself and my label The Tenth Music has come. It started off as a conversation between my brother and I in Woodbridge, Virginia. I posted a video on social media of me singing a song by Trey Songz and Sammie, while my cousin was beatboxing. The video caught some traction and my brother saw my passion for music. Funny enough, I got most of my passion for music from my brother and my father, growing up listening to 112 and jagged edge with my bother and Teddy Pendergrass and The Whisperers with my father. After realizing my passion and understanding his own with music, my brother presented an idea to me that ended up altering the entire trajectory of my life. That was to Co- Own a record label called The Tenth Music. I laugh because I reflect on everything we thought we knew at the beginning of this journey. Proud because of everything we’ve learned and implemented along the way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jon Echols, an R&B singer-songwriter based in Washington, DC, originally from Hampton, VA. My sound is shaped first by the legends who came out of Virginia and beyond — Pharrell, Timbaland, D’Angelo — along with artists like Chris Brown, Bryson Tiller, and Ty Dolla $ign. Their creativity, soul, and genre-blending approach inspire the storytelling and real emotion I put into every record.

I co-own The Tenth Music LLC with my brother, Josh Echols. Together, we built this company as a space where artists can create freely, own their work, and push the culture forward. It’s more than a label — it’s a platform dedicated to developing timeless music, unique visuals, and meaningful experiences for listeners.

Right now, I’m focused on expanding my catalog, releasing new visuals, and growing my presence in cities like DC and Houston, where the energy and support have been incredible. Everything I do centers around connection — telling stories people feel and building a brand that stands the test of time.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I realized fully the autonomy I have over my life. Throughout life there are many opportunities, many journeys that we want to explore. However, we allow ourselves to doubt our own ability and allow others to impose their own fears on us. Pursuing a career in music allows me the opportunity to dive into my passion and provides a goal to chase everyday when I wake up. I feel powerful being able to put my fate in my own hands. I believe your only as powerful as your dreams and powerful dreamers turn their dreams into a reality. The power lies in being able to live my life to the fullest extent that my mind can conceive.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Honestly, I have thoughts of giving up everyday. I could live a much simpler life and do things in a more traditional manner. At the end of the day I believe that the thought of giving up comes from fear and your dreams should scare you. If your dreams don’t scare. you, you may not be dreaming big enough.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie is that talent alone will get you far. Some of the most talented artist don’t have the audience they deserve because of the lack of business acumen and proper team around them. I myself am finally understanding that I need to understand more of the business side in conjunction with exploring my artistry.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That if you don’t advocate for yourself and go after what you want, then you’ll never get what you want. Always consider others and take care of your responsibilities but do not lose yourself and your vision in the process. You have to give to yourself so that you have something to give to those around you.
