Story & Lesson Highlights with Julia Perkins of South Shore

We recently had the chance to connect with Julia Perkins and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Julia, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Our inaugural Yoga for Wellness event in August was a fantastic success! We organized a full day packed with activities like yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, Sound Healing, Family Yoga, African Dance, and an insightful workshop on Taking Care of Ourselves and Each Other. The best part? It was all free! Over 150 residents and their families joined in the fun, creating an incredible atmosphere of joy and connection—all centered around health and wellness. It was truly inspiring to see everyone coming together, laughing, and embracing a healthier lifestyle!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I opened Studio Yogi almost three years ago to create an inclusive space where people can engage in yoga on their own terms. Since the Studio opened, I have had knee replacement surgery on both knees. Even before I developed severe osteoarthritis, it was essential to find a yoga practice that acknowledged and honored the limitations of our bodies. I believe our unique differentiators are the variety of yoga styles we offer, including Kemetic, Vinyasa, Yoga Basics, Hatha, Rocket, and Power Movement. Additionally, incorporating classes such as sound healing and Tai Chi enriches the experience, allowing participants to connect with their well-being in unique and meaningful ways. Moreover, I think Studio Yogi stands out from other studios I have visited because of the supportive community it fosters, all aimed at enhancing our well-being through movement.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The bond I shared with my mother, Anna Marie, profoundly shaped my sense of self and my place in the world. She was my greatest champion, always rooting for my aspirations, even when she didn’t fully grasp them. Her unwavering belief in me instilled a deep understanding of living with purpose, whatever that meant for me at different points in my life.

My mother had an incredible nurturing presence and constantly pushed me to reach my fullest potential. I can still hear her asking, “Did you do your best? Would you change anything you did? What lessons did you learn that will make you stronger?” These questions became a guiding force in my life, encouraging introspection and resilience. Her influence continues to inspire me as I navigate my life path.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Building the studio was a journey filled with challenges, but it was also a testament to resilience and community spirit. Facing rejection from lenders was tough—six times I heard “no,” and each time it weighed heavily on me. I questioned whether pursuing this dream was worth the emotional toll.

However, the support from my incredible team reignited my determination. They stood by me, encouraging me to push forward, reminding me of the impact we could have. I realized that this studio was not just a personal dream; it was a vital resource for our under-resourced community, which often lacked access to yoga and wellness.

During difficult times, I discovered a greater sense of purpose.. This journey was about more than just building a space; it was about creating a haven for healing, connection, and growth. Each setback became a stepping stone, reminding me that the path to making a difference is rarely straight, but it is profoundly worth it. Together, we are creating something beautiful and transformative for our community.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my closest friends would describe me as someone who genuinely values authenticity above all. It’s something that’s deeply woven into my identity. For me, being true to myself isn’t just about being honest; it’s also about integrity, commitment, and a strong sense of social consciousness. Without these traits, I don’t think I would feel complete. My friends would probably say that I wholeheartedly embrace my unique identity and encourage others to do the same.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
My self-worth and self-value are not based on praise from others. For me, the most important praise comes from within. If I give it my all and do my best, then that is good enough and all I can expect from myself.
