Story & Lesson Highlights with Kayla Mickel

Kayla Mickel shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kayla , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
spending time with my friends and going out partying with them and just being surrounded by good people .

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
hi! My name is Kayla. I’m 20 years old .im an upcoming/ aspiring makeup artist. Right now I’m taking clients for anything and currently building my social media presence but in the future , I want to develop my brand and buisness into something bigger. I want to be a celebrity makeup artist and also work on movie and tv sets.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
What I believed as a child that I no longer believe is me being “ugly”. I was bullied pretty heavily about my looks growing up and I got to the point to where that’s all I would think about . I was fully convinced these mean people were right . I tore myself up everyday , crying about how ugly I was. But now that I’m older I realize looking back , that I was never ugly. They were just jealous and mean. And now I don’t care what people think about me and I’m confident about myself .

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I cared about what people thought about me for sooooo long . I’ve always wanted to be an influencer of some sort. Makeup and beauty related things was something I’ve always been into. I’ve wanted to start YouTube channels and post on social media like an influencer but I cared about what people would think about it too much and it held me back. I would do it and then once people saw it or brought it up to me , I’d immediately freak out and delete it. Now I don’t care and I’m focused on growing me and my brand and the opportunities that could come from it.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Definitely just living honestly and genuinely. I cannot stand when something isn’t genuine, whether it’s a person or something . All I ask in life is that the people around me are just genuine and honest. I don’t see how it’s so hard for people, maybe because I’m good at communicating and at being genuine I see it that way. But I don’t ask for a lot , just the bare minimum. All I want is something or something that I represent or other people represent to be genuine and honest.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Letting my fears take over and worrying about being judged . I am no where near the level of fear that I was a couple years ago but i definitely still fear being judged and that’s normal. If i had 10 years left , i would just start posting and doing what I want and work extra hard to achieve all my goals and maybe not slack off as much or push things aside.
