We’re looking forward to introducing you to King Shinobe. Check out our conversation below.
Hi King, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Music. It’s timeless and when it inspires you the moment can last forever with the right vibe.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m King Shinobe a rapper/cannabis advocate/entrepreneur from Camden NJ. I’m part of a larger group of dope artist from the Jersey area, mainly Piranha School, and together we are Dope Fam/Ducking Fope. Currently I have a new album titled “Throne” scheduled for release later this summer and we have a collaboration album coming out shortly after. Im also working with local growers to finish a strain I’ve been working on but no timetable has been set for that yet. My music is a blend of boom bap and trap hip hop styles; with a heavy dose of lyrical expertise and melodic expression that seamlessly flows together to make my own unique sound.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I think I’ve always been me and the world just helped prepare me to be seen on a bigger scale. Authenticity is a huge part of our culture and the more you can be yourself while being able to express your artistic views only solidifies you as top-tier in this industry. So I’d say the world didn’t tell me who I was, I told the world to announce me and now I’m here!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! I think the struggle is when you find yourself and it helps you appreciate the things we take for granted. When you get to a point where you want to give up it unlocks your will to survive and when you decide to keep going and make it through the situation you gain a confidence and experience you couldn’t get anywhere else. I was at a crossroads several years ago with music but I’m glad I stayed with it. You cant succeed unless you see things through.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Togetherness and happiness. We are strongest when together and happy people make life easier to deal with. Keeping my troops moral high as the “glue guy” is probably the best way my friends would describe me. A smile on my face and some words of wisdom for sure.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
The path traveled to get there. People look back and see greatness but they never see the cost it took to get there. I want people to know my whole story, I don’t want to be a unattainable myth that nobody can relate to. Understanding that I’m just like you, I came from the same places as the you. With hard work everyone can achieve your goal but just know it’s not going to be easy.
