We’re looking forward to introducing you to Laurie Lipton. Check out our conversation below.
Laurie, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
I draw
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I began drawing detailed images at the age of four and never stopped. I’ve lived in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, London and currently am residing in Los Angeles. My work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the United States. Method and subject converge in my large-scale and exacting pencil drawings. I draw with the precision of a brain surgeon. The results are stunning, worrying, funny and, above all, powerful. You can see more of my work on my Instagram (@laurieliptondrawings) or on my website (laurielipton.com)
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents saw me and encouraged me to follow my passion for art. I was very lucky.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. It will all be alright, in spite of you”
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I just finished a 20ft x 6ft10″ drawing about climate change. I kept coming into my studio, looking at the piece, and muttering, “Why am I doing this to myself?” But I did it. It took forever. It’s magnificent and needs to be in a museum.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope I’ve inspired other artists the way I’ve been inspired. I remember being brought into museums as a child and feeling so lit up… like my soul was eating light… by some of the works made by artists centuries ago. There is a golden thread of art that has been handed down since the dawn of civilization. I hope my work gets on that thread and fills others that come after me.
