We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lindsey Olson. Check out our conversation below.
Lindsey, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes! My husband and I bought a fixer upper and have been renovating every room as well as changing interior walls to create a space that is right for us. I have a vision of how I want each space to look and not only is it great to work though the vision and selected materials with 3D renderings, I have also been able to communicate my vision of the build out to my husband (also the contractor) with clear direction.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Kansas City Native and have been in the Design Industry for 12 years. I started 3D Design Transformations in the height of lockdown in 2020 after recognizing the need for 3D renderings during remodel and new build projects. So many of us are visual but have a hard time seeing the finished space based on 2D plans and/or design boards. With 3D Design Transformations we offer Photorealistic Renderings and walking tours of the space before work has even started. The renderings can be used to help clients make design decisions, communicate with subcontractors and help clients see the end results as they are in the middle of construction.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom taught me the most about work. She started her own business in 1982 in order to work from home and stay home to raise my brother, sister and I. I have always looked up to her and her ability to work while being there for us. She’s been such a good example for me as I am about to start my own family and aim to run my business while also raising my child.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me resilience and to accept that most things are out of my control. It has also taught me that even if things feel horrible in the moment, it’s just a moment and better days are to come.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That everything happens quickly and without any setbacks. Most of what we see on TV and online in the Interior Design Industry is the final result, not the phase where you are living in a construction zone or something goes wrong. I remember when my husband and I first started renovating our house we had my step-kids help us paint and my step daughter said “They make this look so fast and easy on HGTV!” I am sharing our process on Instagram and have been showing the process (the good, the bad, and the ugly) and how long it is taking.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I feel like I am finally doing what I was born to do. Right after college I was a preschool teacher and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t love it. When I decided to leave teaching to pursue Interior Design I had people say “but you’re so good at teaching.” I knew that if I stayed teaching I wouldn’t be happy and needed to make to move. After multiple jobs in the Interior Design field, I was able to acquire so many skills and experiences that I was confident in my ability to start and run my own business offering Designers, Contractors and Clients a service that would improve their remodel and new build experience.
