María Luque shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi María , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Right now I feel really proud because I’m trying to cut down on my screen time. I’m telling all my friends about it, just like when I quit smoking 12 years ago. I’m sleeping better, remembering my dreams, reading a lot more, and feeling more clear-headed. I hope I can keep it up.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an artist, I work as an editorial illustrator, and I also write. I enjoy working in various mediums, although drawing is where I feel most comfortable. I’m currently working on a novel (without illustrations, just words) and also on an exhibition for Galería Mar Dulce in Buenos Aires next year.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember one summer, when I was 10, I got black sneakers as a gift. I’d never worn clothes that color before. Instantly, I felt grown-up, I felt cool. I think that day I stopped feeling like a little girl. It makes me laugh to remember this, because now black is the color I wear the least. I really enjoy wearing colors. But I’m amazed by the power colors have to make us feel different.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was little, I used to think Batman was hiding under my bed. Batman terrified me, for some strange reason. I remember inventing ridiculous methods to stop thinking about it and fall asleep. Once, I even tried to name each of my hairs. I’d start with a tiny strand on my forehead: Carla, Cintia, Paula, Florencia, until I ran out of ideas, until I finally fell asleep.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Right now I’m completely captivated by Lucrecia Martel, the film director. I’m fascinated by her way of understanding the world; I think she has an incredible clarity of vision for the times we’re living in. I listen to every interview I can find with her, and I greatly admire her passionate way of expressing her ideas.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Endless scrolling, definitely. I hope I can completely break that habit. Replace it with walks around the neighborhood, conversations with friends, kisses with my girlfriend, pudding recipes, reading, doodling in a notebook.
