Story & Lesson Highlights with Mariah Brocka of Marion, Iowa

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mariah Brocka. Check out our conversation below.

Mariah, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m definitely wandering. To me, walking a path means choosing the way that’s already been done before, it’s easier, it’s safe, it’s predictable, it’s boring. I’ve been there, done that. I’d rather wander. Wandering is where creativity happens. It’s where you find things no one’s ever seen before and create things that have never been done.

That’s the essence of being a creative and an entrepreneur. We don’t follow, we see possibilities, and we chase them. Entrepreneurship is constant learning, exploring, and making something out of nothing. It’s not just about adapting, it’s about creating more. The wandering spirit is what keeps the creative industry alive.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
MPRINT started as a dream I had while navigating life with a disability and searching for a way to work that didn’t break me down. The traditional 9–5 world didn’t support my needs, physically or mentally. I needed flexibility. I needed purpose. And more than anything, I needed to build something on my own terms, something that would work with my body and my life.

So I created MPRINT.

Hi, I’m Mariah, the designer and founder of MPRINT. I always hesitate to call myself just a designer, because what we do here is so much bigger. Yes, I design logos, websites, design and print business merchandise, but really, MPRINT is about bringing a brand’s soul to life.

I mostly work with women-owned businesses, and what inspires me most is getting to learn their stories and uncover what makes them unique. Everyone has such incredible talents, and I love being the one to create the visuals that help the world see and feel that. To me, design isn’t just about pretty graphics, it’s about building a visual identity that makes someone say, “This is exactly what I’ve been trying to put into words.”

At the end of the day, I get to be a cheerleader for entrepreneurs, helping their businesses stand out, shine bright, and feel authentic to who they are. That’s what MPRINT is all about.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Oooooo these are good fricking questions!!

I was free spirited, artsy, and fiercely independent. I HAD to choose my own outfits, and they were unique in every possible way. I was the chatterbox, the life of the party, the kid who brought her karaoke machine to every family gathering just so I could throw a concert. I was free to be me.

At the same time, I was kind of a loner but it never really bothered me. I loved connection, sure, but I also loved being independent, and that’s still a huge part of who I am today.

That independence and free spirit absolutely show up in MPRINT. I want people to embrace what makes them different and wear it proudly, because that’s exactly what small businesses are- a bold, unique talent that someone had the courage to share with the world.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me that there’s always a next chapter. You’re never truly stuck. You always have the ability to pivot and create the life you want. That’s really what life is about: it’s a journey, and we have to learn to make things work for us, not the other way around.

I was diagnosed with a chronic back condition when I was 13, and I know without a doubt that journey is the reason I’m here today, running this incredible business. It forced me to see life differently, to chase flexibility and purpose, and to build something that works with who I am instead of against me.

Because of that, I’ve had the chance to meet amazing, inspiring people, to fuel my creativity, and to fill my own cup in ways I never thought possible. Most importantly, it allows me to show my kids that they can chase whatever dream they want—and that no obstacle has the power to define them.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, for the most part! I’m truly an open book. But I’ve learned that I actually express myself best through writing rather than talking. So in some ways, the public version of me is the most real version because when I’m writing, I can be more vulnerable, authentic, and clear about who I am.

In person, I sometimes struggle to put my thoughts into words, but since so much of my work is virtual, I get to show up in the way that feels the most true to me. Writing allows me to share the realest version of myself and that’s the version most people see.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Absolutely born to do. You hear all the cliché things, like how you know you’re where you’re supposed to be when Sundays aren’t scary and Mondays aren’t the worst days ever and that’s completely true for me.

My husband always jokes that I should have more hobbies, but my hobby is my work. I literally love what I do. Designing isn’t just my job, it’s fun, it’s energizing, it’s everything I’ve ever wanted to spend my time on, it’s literally just me. When I get a new inquiry from a client, I can’t stop thinking about it until I start working on it, and I can’t stop working on it until it’s done, because I’m so excited to see the vision come together. And the best part? Presenting it to them and seeing them experience their business and branding as something that truly feels like them. The feeling of bringing someone else’s vision to life, that’s why I do this!
