Story & Lesson Highlights with MELISSA GREEN of Upper East Side

MELISSA GREEN shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi MELISSA, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am wandering for the first time in my entire life. I’ve always walked a defined path, but this past year has been full of very liberating changes and choices.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a semi-retired teacher, retired commercial rea estate banker, ceramic artist and new grandmother. Weird combo, I know. I worked in corporate banking and real estate development, started a ceramics studio business (later sold it but still create there) , started teaching real estate classes at the undergraduate level this year after teaching continuing education for 13+ years.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My dad, and not always in a good way. He was cautious because he felt a responsibility to support his family, but never really got to express himself because he was fearful of losing a job. I learned from him that you need to take risks and lose the fear sometimes.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I changed my mind about failing in general – you survive, get stronger, and pick yourself up and start over. I am stronger because of my failures.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Being kind. Caring about friends and family and showing that caring in meaningful ways. Standing up for people (and animals) that are less fortunate.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When my hands are in clay or petting my dogs (or both at the same time)
