Story & Lesson Highlights with Michael Clark

We recently had the chance to connect with Michael Clark and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up. I look at the news. I find a couple clips to make me laugh. That’s how I like to engage my brain and then I start thinking of things I have to take care of and prep myself to start the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I am Mike Agent-X Clark, DJ, producer from Detroit. I’m part of the original Techno house scene and started producing at the beginning of the house techno movement. I feel blessed to still be out here djing all around Detroit, the United States and abroad. Collaborating with a lot of different people, experimenting, keeping myself and my sound updated. Right now, I’m focused on more production and possibly starting my label back up.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was this little ADHD kid trying to figure out who am I and what am I doing. I was different than most people around me and I knew that I couldn’t figure it out. I like being around nature and I love listening to music. I love watching entertainment. It gives me a comfort so always knew I wanted to do something in those fields. I was also blessed to study martial arts and martial arts empowered me as a person and taught me to love myself and empower myself as no one else can.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there were a few times I wanted to give up and there was a time I did stop djing. I felt betrayed by someone that I looked up to as a mentor, and I was clearly used a few times for their benefit and it really mess with my head and I Looked at everyone around me as not trustworthy, and I quit the business totally. After several years of doing other things and trying to figure out myself I realized that I shouldn’t allow others to make me not love my music and myself, and I learned from that day on to not allow negative intentions to impact me and I should give them no attention, let alone give them what they want. I am better and I rise above those and I spread positivity against the negativity and I try to spread that to keep as much positivity around me and the world as I can.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I’m pretty laid back. While I enjoy being at home in hermit mode at times, I also love being out in the clubs, exploring new locations and finding new sounds. I like to treat others as I like to be treated. Karma and shit… LOL

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Hopefully, my Legacy. I didn’t get married or have children so the only thing I can leave this world is my legacy. I try to make sure I speak of my history appropriately. As someone who was there when the music began, I try to make sure I tell the story, making sure that any history that I was a part of that is explained correctly as I was blessed to see the history being made here in Detroit, Chicago, and New York.
