Nicky Posley shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Nicky, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Creating art, of any kind allows me to lose track of time, and tap into what I believe is sacred. Long before I had any career aspirations, I was driven to be creative. It’s when I feel most alive. When I’m in that zone, I feel tapped in, like an instrument of nature.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a fine artist, turned makeup artist, working in the beauty industry. I’m also a global educator, cosmetic brand product development consultant, and content creator. I enjoy being multifaceted, in how I express my gifts. It’s a demanding, fast paced industry that can be isolating, so for most of us, we have to wear multiple hats to thrive.
Sometimes I’m working with everyday people for their special occasions & life events. Other days, It might be helping a celebrity put their best face forward for the red carpet, interview, or project. I’ve also been sought out by artists from around the globe, for education, which is very humbling. I began my career working behind the cosmetic counter, where I honed my craft. I’ve always believed in putting one foot in front of the other, showing up, and seeing what happens.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I grew up in a creative and performing arts program, from 6th grade, through the end of high school. That experience changed me. It opened my eyes to what it meant to live a creative life. I didn’t have much materially growing up, but I’ve always been rich in imagination, and determination.
I came to understand what it was to tap into a gift I had inside of me, and what it takes to nurture it. Change can start as a whisper, and faith has to be fed, to grow. Being an artist can mean a lot of different things, and for me, it wasn’t just painting a pretty picture or beautiful face. It’s knowing that I’m connected to something larger than myself. Truth be told, artists make the world go’ round, but we have to fight for our gains, in an industry that can be dismissive, and far from a meritocracy.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
It would be keep going… I know things get hard, but you’re strong, and you’re worth every beautiful outcome you can create.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The lie is that there isn’t enough to go around. Lack mentality is a poison that has many in a choke hold. Helping another person succeed, or to find the resources they need to be their best will never limit the heights you can rise to. It will increase them. Some of the very people who refuse to clap for others are also wondering why blessings aren’t rushing in for them. Energy is cyclical.
When people around me win, I’m able to celebrate that for, and with them. At the end of the day, I’m only competing with my own best self.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Knowing our worth is the only way to ever truly get what we deserve, and that’s rarely going to come from working for someone else.
No one can do it all alone, but my best opportunities have been the ones, I created myself. There’s nothing more rewarding than having an idea you believe in, and watching it work.
I’m grateful for the work I do. The days that feel the best are the ones where I’m doing what I love, being respected for what I bring to the job or project, and of course being properly compensated! There are many trade-offs in this work, but every professional has to have boundaries, and understand the fine line between exposure and exploitation. My hope is to leave every situation better than it was.
