Story & Lesson Highlights with Olyn Moon

We recently had the chance to connect with Olyn Moon and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Olyn, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
There are a couple of things.

Writing, if I get into the flow and lost in the story time will slip away from me.

The other are Pokemon video games. Nothing else gets me lost in the world like they do.

Finding myself again from writing usually ends with me getting stuck on something, and need to work out a plot point or beat. With games it will just be me realizing I’m tired.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Olyn Moon. I was born in Oklahoma, grew up between there and Texas. Lived in a few other places around the U.S. I started writing when I was very young. Just one or two page short stories while bored in church. Then as I got older started doing fanfiction and as a teenager started my own ideas. Inspiration coming mostly from my love of Japanese History. Then as an adult I’ve broadened what I write about. Now I have Horror, Gothic Romance, Fantasy, and more to come.

I write things that interest me. Instead of sticking to one genre I find it better to be able to reach all things. Blending all the things that inspire me to want to write.

Right now I’m working on getting book 3 of my Blood and Moonlight series out. I have a contemporary romance that I plan to release, and a supernatural horror. Along with completing book 4 of the Blood and Moonlight series.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
For the longest time I never let anyone read a single thing I wrote. I wrote, and still do, for myself. Not really anyone else, despite my want to be a writer. I just never had the confidence to show anyone else.

Then someone ended up reading the first draft of the first book I put out into the world. Which made me even decide to publish it. I was writing it, because I love to write. They showed interest in what I was writing and I reluctantly let them read what I had so far. And they wanted more. It was at that moment I could believe that someone would like what I wrote.

It gave me the confidence to publish my first book. The Trails of the Goblin Horde.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
That I’m not good at what I love to do. It took me most of my life to gain the confidence to show my work to the world. And so far it’s mostly been positive.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I want to become a known author. Not real famous, not huge. I just want to become someone that some people know that aren’t friends.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I already do. I don’t look for praise.
