Pierre Junior Guillaume shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Pierre Junior, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am walking a path. Where this path leads to is one that I entrust to Christ. Often times along the way, it can feel like I am wandering. Its easy to have a lack of motivation to create when most of your time and energy is given to work. Ideas can change or sometimes you’re not in a mood to create at all. Even in these funks, I know not to worry. I feel that my creative field of work isn’t being exercised the way I would like to, only because I am also on the grind to be in a comfortable space where I can focus more on the things I want to create and build. Its exciting to be closer to a space where I will be able to focus more on my dreams. A long road and path ahead but with my guiding light, what is there to fear?
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Pierre Junior Guillaume. My brand is called Subtle Garments. I have always been into dressing myself and feeling my best doing so. Subtle is a testament to that. Since highschool, I’ve experimented with creating clothes. Wanting to create pieces that made me feel cool and confident to take on anything. The way I could feel in clothes was what I wanted others to feel. I’ve worked for brands such as Prada and Barney’s New York. I am currently at my full time, part time, at Dior. It’s been a blessing to work for a pillar fashion house that has made such an impact to the world. I love acquiring more knowledge and learning from how different fashion houses operate. Ultimately, I want Subtle to be a way for others to build a confidence and create community. I’d love for the world to become smaller and filled with more style and kindness through subtle.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
At an early age, my parents taught me how important work is. I would see their hard work and sacrifices they would make for our family. Both of my parents are immigrants and came into America in their mid teens. They both worked in order to support their families and school. They taught me about building a strong foundation and work ethic because the hard work will always pay off.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There are many times where you can feel like giving up. I’ve taken so many L’s. There have been times where I’ve had clothing orders made entirely wrong, things damaged, funds wasted. There are many reasons why you can argue to give up, but that can be the case for anything. I’ve made peace with myself that L’s and being in situations that have made you want to give up, are only chapters of character building in your life. They are lessons learned that will turn into success once you try again. Its how you pick yourself up from the L’s that help make giving up not an option.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Subtle, its more than just a brand, I want it to become a lifestyle.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
I’ve had certain goals and certain things I’ve wanted that I thought would bring me satisfaction. Once you reach those certain points in your life that you wanted, often times you’ll want more or you’ll want whats next. I’ve come to find i’m satisfied with being at my pace of wanting things. I only find true satisfaction through the man above.
