Hi Rochelle, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m proud of building a life filled with peace and mindfulness. Too often people spend their youth chasing goals, career, money and fame, and are unhappy or lose themselves in the process. However, I’ve mastered setting boundaries, prioritizing joy and building strong relationships over chasing recognition and wealth, and I’m quite proud of that. I’ve earned peace and inner contentment which isn’t easily shaken.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a travel blogger, published author and attending internist based in Jamaica. I explore and highlight my island home of Jamaica and beyond with a focus on nature, culture and sustainable travel. When I started my travel blogging journey eight years ago, there weren’t a lot of people who looked like me or had a full time career. As such, my goal is to inspire people with weak passports and full-time jobs to explore their corner of the world.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
As a child, I daydreamed of exploring the world one day but my family didn’t have the means to travel while growing up. It wasn’t until 2016 that I had the epiphany that I could explore right at home as I lived in Jamaica, a destination for which people saved to visit. I began a quest to explore Jamaica’s hidden rivers, waterfalls, ruins, museums and other places of interest. This shifted my perspective on what travel could look like. Now, I ensure to travel sustainably, explore off the beaten path and connect with locals wherever I go to ensure my adventures benefit the community and have minimal environmental impact.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I believe struggle builds character, empathy, humility and resilience. Growing up without much taught me resourcefulness, and I’m so happy to have a small but close-knit family that encourages me to chase my dreams and achieve success.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me, but I’m cautious about what I share online. Believe it or not, I identify as a private figure so I don’t share my career, husband and family on the Internet. Certain moments are best kept private.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me fondly for my hardworking spirit and tenacity, and remain inspired to explore the world sustainably.
