Shevaun Poole shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Shevaun, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
What I’m most proud of building that nobody really sees is the trust and emotional comfort behind the grooming process. On the surface, people see a freshly groomed dog who looks and smells great—but what they don’t see is the time, patience, and care I put into making sure each pet feels safe, calm, and respected throughout the experience. Many of the dogs I work with are nervous, anxious, or have had negative grooming experiences in the past, and creating a space where they feel comfortable and cared for is something I quietly build with every visit. That invisible foundation of trust is what I value most, because it strengthens the bond not only between me and the dogs, but also between pets and their owners.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shevaun Poole, and I’m the owner of Scruffy Dooz Grooming, a pet grooming business built on patience, compassion, and personalized care. What makes Scruffy Dooz special is that I don’t just focus on how a dog looks when they leave—I focus on how they feel during the entire grooming process. Many of my clients come to me with pets who are nervous, shy, or have had difficult experiences with grooming in the past. I take the time to create a calm, welcoming environment so every dog feels safe and cared for, no matter their temperament.
Scruffy Dooz Grooming is about more than just great grooms—it’s about building trust with both pets and their owners and celebrating each dog’s unique personality. Right now, I’m continuing to grow my brand and expand my services, always keeping my mission the same: making grooming a positive, stress-free experience for every pup that walks through my doors.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work is my grandpa. He showed me that work isn’t just about completing tasks—it’s about integrity, dedication, and treating people with respect. From him, I learned the value of hard work, loyalty, and always giving your best, no matter how big or small the job. He led by example, showing that patience, consistency, and pride in your work are what truly make a difference. His lessons continue to guide me every day, both in my personal life and in running Scruffy Dooz Grooming, where I aim to bring the same care, dedication, and respect to every pet and client.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: “Trust yourself and be patient—you’re capable of more than you realize, and it’s okay to take your time learning and growing.” I would want my younger self to know that mistakes aren’t failures; they’re lessons, and every step—even the hard ones—helps build the person you’re meant to become.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
The person I admire most for their character is my partner. What stands out to me is their kindness, empathy, and unwavering support for the people around them. They lead with integrity and compassion rather than seeking recognition or authority, and they consistently choose honesty, patience, and understanding in their relationships. Their character inspires me to be a better person every day, both personally and professionally.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m fully present in the moment, whether that’s spending quiet time with my pets, working hands-on at Scruffy Dooz Grooming, or connecting with loved ones. There’s something grounding about creating a calm, safe space for others—whether it’s a dog in my care or a friend needing support—that helps me feel centered, content, and truly at ease.
