Story & Lesson Highlights with Sonya Goss

We recently had the chance to connect with Sonya Goss and have shared our conversation below.

Sonya, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Connecting with others, especially spending time with my family and friends creating memories. Watching my love ones, friends, and associates achieve their goals and celebrating their success can also bring happiness and inspiration.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sonya Goss, I am 48 years old, I’m an entrepreneur and the proud owner of Sonya’s Creations LLC, a dynamic media company.

Sonya’s Creations LLC is your one-stop destination for a wide range of media services, including photography, videography, branding, advertising, and marketing. At Sonya’s Creations, I am committed to providing top-notch services at an affordable price.

With 15 years of professional photography and videography experience, I bring a wealth of expertise to every project. I take immense pride in delivering not only outstanding visuals but also excellent customer service with a focus on prompt delivery. As a contracted photographer for respected publications like the Zachary Advocate and Plainsman Newspaper, and BR Weekly Press, my work has been showcased on television, radio, magazines, newspapers, church ads, and various websites. I’ve invested significantly in top-grade cameras and equipment, a testament to my dedication to the art of my craft.

In January of this year, I signed a contract with Cumulus Media as the official photographer and videographer for all stations in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and New Orleans, such as Q106.5, MAX94.1, Q95.5, Classic Hits 103.3, Heaven 95.7, Magic 104.7, KMEZ 102.9, and The Ticket 106.7.

Beyond my professional life, I cherish my roles as a wife and mother of two. I’m also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. As a member of the Mu Zeta Chapter, I am one of the advisors for the Amicette Zeta Youth Auxiliary Group and a committee member of the Greater Baton Rouge Pan-Hellenic Council representing the Mu Zeta Chapter. In addition to my entrepreneurial pursuits, I serve as a Substitute Teacher for the Zachary Community School District, where I have, so far, dedicated seven years to educating and inspiring young minds at Zachary High School and Northwestern Middle School.

I have been selected as the Ambassador of the month for the Zachary Chamber of Commerce, and I was also selected as the Business Spotlight of the week for the North Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce. I am an active member of both chambers. I joined the Zachary Chamber to grow my business and be a part of my current community and I joined the North Baton Rouge Chamber to give back and be a part of the community where I lived 25 years of my life.

During my precious downtime, you can find me relishing quality moments with my family and indulging in my favorite TV shows.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was just a little girl from a little town name, New Roads in the state of Louisiana. Living freely, playing with my toys, riding my bike, having fun with my cousins and friends, and spending time with my family, especially on Sundays at my grandparents house. Those were some of the best times in my life.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, in this media industry, I almost gave up, but I became motivated to keep pushing through, and I’m glad I didn’t because now I have become more successful in what I truly love and passionate about.

When I first started my business, I was booking sessions and events almost every weekend. Then as I fine tuned my craft and having to spend more hours of editing, I went up on my prices just a little bit, however, those bookings that I were getting all of a sudden slowed down. It was a bit discouraging but I knew my worth. Most people just don’t know the time and sacrifice it takes to build a successful media business. I don’t just arrive at a location to take pictures and go home, then give you the pictures. I go through every picture, which can range from 100 to 2000 plus, and I edit every single picture that I give my clients. And for videos, I create a story. Once I finish editing, I’ll watch the video at least 4 times before finalizing it to make sure it’s sharp and clear. I take pride in my craft and give express delivery at no extra charge.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely, I treat people how I want to be treated, even if I don’t get it in return. I am a very honest and loyal person. I treat people with love and kindness. Even if someone doesn’t like me, I will still speak and be respectful in their presence.

I am a very caring and kind hearted person, I don’t mind helping others, but I will not allow anyone to take advantage of me or use me for their own advantage or benefit. What you see is what you get in actions and words.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I believe my clients would miss my excellent customer service and express delivery that I provide.
