We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sweta Rai. Check out our conversation below.
Sweta, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
What am I chasing? For a long time, I believed it was the summit, the moment when the world applauds and the lights burn brightest. When my film was shortlisted for the OSCAR race, it felt like stepping into a dream I had carried for years. The energy, the expectation, the sheer intensity of it all was overwhelming, but it also opened my heart in ways I hadn’t imagined. Because once the noise quieted, the real challenge began. Everyone wanted to know what my next project would be, and the weight of those expectations pressed hard. That’s when I turned inward, toward stillness, meditation, and slowing my steps. I learned that the chase doesn’t always mean running; sometimes it means pausing, breathing, and choosing your direction with care.
And so, I kept making movies. I kept working on more and more film projects, but with a new rhythm, less about racing toward validation, more about savoring the journey of creation. Each story became not just a step forward, but a deeper conversation with myself and with the world.
If I ever stopped chasing entirely, I think a part of me—the creator, the dreamer—would fade. But when I slowed down, I found something beautiful: it’s not about a rat race, it’s about whether you let your work be a joyous process, a celebration of being alive. The choice, always, is yours.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Hollywood-based film producer, director, entrepreneur, and the Founder & CEO of Indo Holly Films. My journey began in India, where I transitioned from an engineering background to pursue my true passion: storytelling through cinema. That path took me first to Singapore and then to Los Angeles, where I earned advanced degrees from one of the most prestigious film schools in the world.
As a producer and executive, I’ve been fortunate to work on a wide range of films spanning both commercial and independent spaces. I directed and produced the documentary feature, A Pandemic: Away from the Motherland, which was shortlisted for the Academy Awards race and is now streaming on various platforms. My other credits include serving as an executive on films released by Paramount Pictures such as The Last Gunfight, Man With No Past, and Risqué, as well as producing acclaimed projects like Orphan Horse, Surviving the Wild, and JL Family Ranch: The Wedding Gift.
What makes my work unique is the perspective I bring as a storyteller who bridges East and West. I am passionate about creating cinema that not only entertains but also inspires and connects cultures, highlighting voices and experiences that often go unheard. For me, film is both art and advocacy—a way to tell stories that matter. At present, I’m focused on developing several upcoming features and sitcoms that continue this mission, while also expanding Indo Holly Films’ footprint in the global market. My goal remains the same: to bring powerful, meaningful, heartfelt, and cinematic stories to audiences worldwide.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful goes back to when I was just 3 years old in lower kindergarten. I still remember the first time I faced an audience, playing the role of an Indian princess. Standing on that stage, even at such a young age, gave me a sense of confidence and presence that has stayed with me ever since. From there, I kept returning to the stage throughout my childhood—through plays, dance, and singing. Each experience added a layer to my ability to express myself and connect with people. By the time I became a TV newscaster in my teenage years, I already felt at home in front of the camera and the public eye. Starting in the industry so young gave me not just a career, but also a lasting sense of empowerment, gratitude, and purpose that has shaped me ever since.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: trust the journey and trust yourself. Life will feel like a roller coaster, full of highs, lows, and unexpected turns, but every moment will shape you into who you are meant to be. Choosing not to follow the traditional Indian path of becoming a doctor or an engineer and instead pursuing the uncertain road of becoming a Hollywood producer will come with doubts, sacrifices, and countless challenges. There will be times when you question your choices, but know that it is all worth it. Each risk, each leap of faith, will bring you closer to a life filled with purpose, creativity, and fulfillment. Be patient with yourself and never stop believing that your story is meant to be different.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect at all costs is respect for people, traditions, and perspectives that may be different from my own. Through my work, studies, and travels across various countries, I have experienced how each culture carries its own wisdom and beauty. These experiences have shaped me both as a storyteller and as a person who values empathy and inclusivity.
In my professional journey I make it a point to honor the authenticity of the cultures I encounter, whether through the stories I tell, the locations I highlight, or the people I collaborate with.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m able to step away from the demanding and fast-paced world of Hollywood and lose myself in travel. Having been to over 40 countries, I’ve learned that immersing myself in different cultures not only grounds me but also inspires my creativity as a storyteller and producer. Travel allows me to recharge, while also shaping the way I look at narratives, characters, and settings.
Recently, I took a solo trip through Greece, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. Driving alone across the serene landscapes of Switzerland, I felt an incredible sense of clarity. Ideas for both Bollywood and Hollywood stories started flowing naturally, and I could even visualize breathtaking locations for future shoots. That journey reminded me that peace and purpose can coexist, and for me, they often do when I’m on the road, discovering new places, and letting the world spark my imagination.
