tariq mangum shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
tariq , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I am being called to be closer to God in separate myself from people who are not good for me you think just because you grew up with people that they will always be in your corner and be loyal, but that is not true and life everybody changed, but one person that does not change his guy so being closer to God and letting people know that God is the only thing that I need and learning how to put my trust in faith in God is what I’m called to do now and bring other people close to God
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
hi, my name is Tariq Mangum i grew up in West Philadelphia. I became a quadriplegic at 17 and it changed my whole life forever. I am now the president of my own nonprofit organization called the mangum foundation . I also wrote multiple businesses. I am a serial entrepreneur. I have started many businesses in my time and many are successful.. I also have other people start their dreams and teach Financial Literacy.. I also am an author wrote four books and I also in my world traveler. So in life never put a limit on your self because you can do anything that you put your mind to and God will allow you to succeed as long as you keep that mindset. my new endeavors are building low income housing for people in need and we can take it even farther and build some houses for homeless people as well.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
my mother, my grandma seen that I was a leader from day one I’ve didn’t really notice that people attracted to me , wanted to be like me, wanted advice from me and me to show them the way.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
after being injured when I was 17 in the car accident, it made me wanna give up, but I kept going in persevered. But recently, I had to get another spinal cord surgery that really sent me back and took me back to that same mindset but now it’s making me stronger and knowing what I need to do to move forward due to me have to dealing with this at 17 and now I’m 37 has shown me that life is all about ups and downs and you can get through anything as long as you have the right mindset and God with you
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
people believe they need a big fan base to be successful or big social media to be successful but I want a life. You don’t need any of that. Your fans will follow you and your people will follow you long as you be truthful to them.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
people think money is most important to my legacy. What is not it just happened to come with my legacy money is just a tool to get you where you need to go on life but the real part about my legacy is leaving something behind that someone can learn from and grow from and show them that they can defeat all odds, regardless in a wheelchair or not in a wheelchair.
