We recently had the chance to connect with Treyon Sargent and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Treyon , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Walking
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello world, fellow spirits young and old my name is Treyon. A Miami-born renaissance man. A dancer, actor, model, choreographer, and performing artist whose work lives at the intersection of movement and storytelling. I have Trained with the likes of The Ailey School, Dance Theatre of Harlem, New World School of the Arts, & both local and international studios along with a strong list of choreographers, directors, & teachers. Having performed and choreographed across stages and screens, from musicals and international studios to HBO Max’s Legendary. Through every role, I use my artistry as a vessel of healing and empowerment moving audiences, shifting spirits, and healing souls of all types one eight count at a time.
Something unique about me…i’d say would be I have an infectious personality behind the talents. I have an ability to create a safe atmosphere for whoever I am with which then provides an open forum of all kinds of conversations and experiences. I must say it has created some REALLY memorable moments.
I am currently working on a few projects releasing as time passes along. However, I am always looking for fellow peers to collaborate with, of course to get hired for any of the hats I carry like every other self-entrepreneur as well, but mainly I want to continue my pursuit of world healing in the best way I can with whomever would like to join the journey and experience my lane. I call my supporters the TreyBae’s and the application to be one of them is forever extended, male, female, and in between.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I feel most powerful when I am sitting in my gift of dance. I remember the roar of the crowd at Ailey Camp Miami back when I was 13 years old. The way the camp works is they split everyone into groups that spell out CAMP and each group travels together and basically just experiences the entire experience with each other for the most part. The camp puts on an end of the summer camp show and each group gets an assigned dance style they have to perform at the show. That year ours was West African with Momma Trina (RIP) . One thing lead to another and next thing you know I am standing palms facing an audience of over 2500 people head to the sky and a huge smile on my face because west African dancers smile…and all I remember hearing is the crowd ROAR and in that moment I would say I felt my most powerful. All those eyes, that applause, the joy that bought to so many people for all of 5 minutes. I will never forget it.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me Patience, In my opinion people can get a lot more lost sitting in success rather than sitting in suffering. You have a stronger drive and will power when you see something you don’t have and you feel it. Suffering is an action a verb quite like success. You have to actively get yourself out of suffering to experience success. I would’ve never learned what success felt like if I had never was put in a position to have to long not being successful and experiencing it. Patience is key even when you are sitting in success cause the only place you can go is up.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
My Skin color. I value being black in America. Simply because we have ALWAYS been of value since being stolen over here on slave ships. You’re only stolen when you are worth being stolen just like merchandise. I love the skin i am in and I try to uphold that through my artistry in any aspect I can. There is nothing like the black experience and a lot of what I dance about, sing about, act about, what I am about in fact is the black experience.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people spread my gospel of Artistic Triumph, loyalty, Love, and peace. I want people to remember me for inspiring them through either their toughest or most easiest times. I personally consider myself and experience and If I so happen to come across paths with you during this experience I’d like it to be most memorable and unforgettable. I want to be remembered in this world for being an Icon, legend, and the G.O.A.T for whatever industry that particular soul has experienced me in.
