We’re looking forward to introducing you to Valeria Prieto. Check out our conversation below.
Valeria , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Meditate while sunbathing and to listen music.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Valeria Prieto, I am a Borderland Mexican artist painter and I have been in the US for 13 years doing art.
I grew up in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, just in the border with El Paso, Texas.
I have been doing art all my life, but I became a professional artist in 2012.
My favorite media is Acrylic, oil and watercolors, but also as a Graphic designer I like to create digital illustration.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I feel powerful every time I finish a painting, especially when I work on large canvases. I love the entire process, from the moment my pencil first touches the canvas to sketch the idea, to the final brushstroke where I sign my name. Each piece holds a part of me, and completing it feels like claiming my creative power and I love contemplate it and realize about all the meanings and thoughts it contains.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wounds of my life have come from solitude and detachment, there were times when I felt deeply disconnected from others and even from myself. But those quiet, lonely spaces also became sacred ground for transformation. Art saved me and keeps saving me. Creating gave me a voice when I had no words, and a way to process pain without having to explain it. With every brushstroke, I’ve rebuilt pieces of myself, turning isolation into introspection and detachment into deep presence. Through art, I’ve learned to feel again connected, if is not with others at least in my own world.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Truth and Authenticity. I like to tell honest stories with my art, it can be very personal.
Each piece is a reflection of my inner world, created not to impress, but to connect. Through honest expression, I hope to remind others that vulnerability is a form of strength, and that there’s beauty in being seen exactly as we are, how we see the world and how we can transform our experiences into unique visions of art.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I’m doing what I came to this life to do: to create. I’ve always wanted to be an artist, to speak through images, to inspire others, and to show that art is a universal language. We may interpret it differently, but we all feel it. Art connects us beyond words.
