Story & Lesson Highlights with Valeriana Wick of Charleston, SC

Valeriana Wick shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Valeriana, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think the biggest thing misunderstood about my business, is that is just soap. Yes I have craft soap, but so much more. In addition all my products has a botanical or herbal properties in them that benefits the skin.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
The passion for making beauty products comes from personal skin issues. In finding alternatives to skin medication, I came across herbs and their beauty properties. Hence, the passion and love for making herbal beauty/body products began. Beautifully Simple Soap L.L.C., utilizes natural ingredients, with the benefits of botanicals/herbs to create our products.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandmother taught most about work and the native way of using what the earth gives , to assist us in life. She is a small women, but a power house. She taught all of her grand children the natural way. From food source, botanical that help with medical concern and of course, how some herbs/botanicals that assist use with our external concerns as well

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I first started my business, I almost gave up in my second year. It felt like no one understood my products are cared about it. However, I stayed with it, began educating customers about the benefits of the botanical in the products. I changed my labelling several times, finally landing on my current one, which give a very brief descriptions on the botanical benefits.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie my industry tells itself and others, are immediate results. There is no immediate correction of skin damage, yes there can be immediate relief but not corrections.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace, is when I am in my workshop creating products.
