Stuart Heir shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Stuart, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I start the day with a Yoga Class. It;s nice to see like minded people who are in tune with their bodies and helps
start the day fresh, Working as an Artist there a lot of alone time needed. The interaction and moving your body keeps you fresh and int une.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am formally a professional studio photographer in New York City. I am self taught and have been working as a illustrator in Procreate for the past six years. My work has a spiritual content and I work usually without any preconceived idea of what I want to draw. Letting it flow I am surprised by the continuity of my work. It is a work of joy to be alone and create undisturbed.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
When I was 18 years old I was a Photographer’s apprentice in a Japanese Studio in NYC. The hours were long and everything had a place and you were expected to do your best always. I was a bit arrogant, in fact a got the job with this famous photographer by putting my foot in the door when the Studio Manager refused to see my portfolio when I was endlessly job hunting. Fortunately the Photographer saw this action and thought this was a good prospect. I got the job and shortly has the Studio Managers job. Persistence pays off, even if it’s an act of desperation.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Follow your own path. No matter what. Do not live for your parents and dream big. Skills take time to learn and trial and error are essential in learning new things. Formal schooling is not for everyone as everyone learns in their own way, In a sense, we are all self taught, Conviction and Consistency will get you further than raw talent.
“Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time”
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
These are troubling times in America.
And the idea of the truth is being questioned and diluted by bad actors.
I never thought a political view would enter my work but it does.
There are voices of freedom and justice for all, to long to mention.
People like Chef José Andrés, and the World Central Kitchen.
No one should stave no matter what,
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
As an Artist there is no such thing as a retirement.
As long as your brain keeps working, you are constantly
creating, organizing, collecting, seeking new experiences
and focusing on your heath and family. It never end it just
manifests in different ways in the way you communicate
and see the world. Kindness is always key.
