Keeping my creativity alive is a constant process. Sometimes, I get really focused on the administration work of ReTextile. While this is important, it can sometimes cause me to forget that quilting is also my hobby, which I initially picked up for fun.

When I start feeling bogged down with administration, I love to work on a quilt. Sometimes I work on a quilt for ReTextile, or a personal quilt, and I have found the actual act of making a quilt brings back the creativity and joy I first found in the craft. Read More>>

I try to keep my creative energy flowing by constantly consuming creative content (films, TV shows, videos, art, etc.) An integral part of creating new things is being inspired by different stories and concepts, whether that be inside your existing realm of knowledge or something new that you want to learn more about. Additionally, I like to try new forms of creative expression, whether that be a different style of film/video making, experimenting with costume design, or making a painting from watercolors instead of acrylics. Creativity can be challenging to maintain. I’ve experienced spells of writer’s block that have lasted days, weeks, and even months. To pull myself out of those pits, I’ll write short poems about nothing in particular. Or, I’ll write random monologues for characters who don’t even exist… yet. Writing doesn’t always have to be meaningful. Sometimes, it just needs to be productive. Write down the first word that comes to mind, and see where the train of thought takes you. Not everything you write will be a hit, and that’s okay! Just do what you can to avoid getting rusty. Read More>>

Like Maya Angelou said, “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use it, the more you have.” I think creativity it one of those skills where the more you use it, the more you learn, and the better you get.

As a painter, I also think you have to know when to put the brush down. If you are a writer or a sculpter or someother kind of creative, I have to believe the same to be true. There are some days that are just a struggle, and that is ok. They won’t all be winners. As long as it is something I can learn from, I take that as a win. Read More>>

We want to believe that creativity is like a wellspring, always bubbling under the surface. While that may be partially true, an active imagination still needs to be encouraged and maintained.

I find the creativity of others incredibly stimulating for my own – sometimes that’s as easy as reading a good story or poem, seeing cool stuff creative friends make on socials. Sometimes its finding a piece of media that inspires you to put your own twist on it, or the desire to refine and explore a concept further. Read More>>

Creativity is best kept alive for me by three things. Music, Rest and Connecting with Family and Friends. These things are not in any particular order.
Music makes me happy and takes me to places where I feel free, and safe to be me. When I put my headphones 🎧 or earpods in that is an indicator that I am in my creative zone . I even dance from time to time. Read More>>

I won’t lie, there are months that I feel like there is nothing new or exciting to do & I just feel plain uninspired. However, setting aside the time to do research on what is popular, how I can put my own spin on it or coming up designs is key. Finding new suppliers is also super helpful when it comes to creativity mojo. For me, it’s all about paying attention to which colors, metals and materials are being worn and figuring out a way to creatively make it work for my business! Read More>>

My creative brain has been working in overtime ever since I was a child. I had often kept myself busy by daydreaming about a video game I was currently playing or about some anime characters that I really loved. Being an only child, my large imagination was a super important factor in keeping me busy. I would draw, write, and do anything to get my thoughts out. It’s really the same till this day. In order to keep my creativity alive I am constantly looking back at my childhood and remembering the things I used to enjoy as a kid. I indulge in different music, shows, and media in order to keep my inner child active. I am also heavily inspired by my peers and my environment. Read More>>

Keeping creativity alive is so personal for every creator, depending on their processes and passions. I keep creativity alive by doing a multitude of things, all of which depend on finding the root cause of why I am feeling blah in the first place. One of the main ways to stay passionate and inspired is curating social media feeds to portray only accounts and creators that resonate with and inspire me. When I am feeling creatively lacking, I can find myself doing unproductive tasks like scrolling social media with no goals, but by following accounts and posts that I know I enjoy and will spark joy, I am once again immersed in creativity. I am interior design by trade, however, I also tattoo, design posters and books, and photograph; having multiple hobbies/disciplines and interest has allowed me to explore different areas of art simultaneously, and if there were ever instances where I feel burnt out in one area, I can shift my focus on developing and exploring other areas. I have been developing and writing stories and diving into creative projects for as long as I can remember. In order for me to continue to do this, I constantly have to stimulate my mind with new experiences and new perspectives. I love meeting new people and listening to their stories (I have always been told I am a very active and engaged listener). I also help keep my creativity alive by traveling and exposing myself to new cultures and ways of life. For instance, when I was in Egypt, I had so much curiosity building in me, and I asked so many questions. But most importantly, I let the people I spoke with speak openly and share their stories. In order to keep my creativity alive, I continue to listen and engage with my surroundings, while also dedicating time to myself to process, reflect, and write. Read More>>

My husband, Trevor, and I tour full-time as musicians in the indie folk duo, Fort Vine. We have been traveling in our self-converted Mercedes Sprinter Van since March of 2018. Because we live a nomadic life on the road, inspiration can be found pretty much anywhere and everywhere we go. We just have to be open to the spark of creativity and – like magic, it is there. I find myself without limits when it comes to creativity as it relates to photography. That doesn’t mean that every client is subject to my whim and curiosity in the studio. In fact, I have specific guidelines with my day-to-day business as a headshot/ portrait photographer. You might even think that I would become complacent doing the same kind of work, day in and day out. Not true. Each client brings their own flavor to a session. My self-declared superpower is connection. I get to know my clients and showcase their best self. This might not be the kind of “creativity” that immediately comes to mind, but it’s a creative pursuit that makes every session unique and keeps me feeling energized. Read More>>

One of the things I wanted to value when starting my pottery business was that I wouldn’t pigeon hole myself into one creative style. There are some pieces that are “typical” in my making process, but I am very intentional to add new work into my rotation. I also love learning and so challenge myself to throw things on the potters wheel I’ve never thrown, use new surface decoration techniques, or experiment with glazes.  Read More>>

Thankfully I have always had a vivid imagination. I think in movie scenes and comedy bits when I or others around me are going through situations. Whether good or bad. There are times when I get writer’s block when working on a song. I have learned to write down whatever lines are in my head even if they don’t rhyme or flow with the previous lines of the song. It’s the act of simply letting it out. I have also learned to leave it be and come back to the song. Read More>>

When it comes to creativity, I think less about keeping it alive and instead about exposure. By exposing yourself to new ideas you find the most creativity. Things like traveling, reading, or trying something new will give me the most exposure and by proxy, keep my creativity flowing. With the influx of new experiences being both good and bad, it allows me to feel the most creative. I believe that everything connects to each other, and by combining them as well as thinking in a creative manner it paves a way to figuring it all out. The connections of experience and thought are the equation that I use to create something interesting. Read More>>

This is a really good question. Lots of things come to my mind, but it’s definitely easier said than done. Being a hairstylist is creative in itself, no one’s head of hair is the same and neither is their goal. This alone helps keep my creativity going because everyone’s final style is different and can be achieved with doing different techniques. Its definitely easy for myself to get burnt out though, as I know it is for other creatives and just people in general. Read More>>

One of the best ways to keep your creativity flowing is to try something new. As a multimedia artist, I have worked with a wide range of mediums throughout the years (watercolor, acrylic, oil pastel, ink, colored pencil, etc.). Every now and then, I decide to try new techniques and play with different mediums in a sketchbook. In those moments, I allow myself to create freely with no expectations. Working in that way removes the pressure of creating a masterpiece. Instead, I use that moment as a learning experience. As a result, I find a new way to express my creativity and my style evolves.
