Taylor Varble of Louisville, Kentucky on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Taylor Varble shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Taylor, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My new nephew! He is the first grandbaby in our family and we are just all so obsessed with him. Seeing my sister in this entirely new light has been one of the most amazing experiences! It really puts into perspective what really matters in life, which is family.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Taylor Varble, and I’m the owner of The Mixing Bar Bakery. I specialize in creating custom cakes and wedding cakes, with a focus on clean, beautiful lines and refined designs that feel both modern and timeless. What began as a simple love for turning butter, sugar, and flour into something meaningful has grown into a brand built on artistry, intention, and a deep appreciation for life’s most important celebrations.

At The Mixing Bar Bakery, every cake is crafted with care — not just to look stunning, but to tell a story. I love working closely with clients to bring their visions to life, whether it’s a sleek wedding cake full of elegant detail or a custom creation made for a milestone moment.

Right now, I’m continuing to refine my techniques, explore new design trends, and expand the creative possibilities of what cake art can be. At the heart of it all, my goal is simple: to create desserts that are as beautiful as they are meaningful and tasty.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that truly shaped how I see the world was losing both of my parents within months of each other. My father’s sudden passing was devastating on its own, but just four months later, we learned that my mother had a rare form of cancer. Walking through that level of grief so close together changed me completely.

It reshaped how I understand people, how I read them, and how I show up in the world. It taught me not to sweat the small stuff, because life is far too short to spend our energy arguing, complaining, or focusing on things that don’t matter.

Going through that experience didn’t just affect me — it formed the core of who I am today. It grounded me, softened me where it mattered, and reminded me of the importance of compassion, presence, and appreciating the moments we’re given.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be this: be kinder to yourself. Things are going to work out, even if they feel heavy or uncertain right now. Life is going to be tough for a while, and you’re going to experience heartbreak, but you’ll also grow in ways you can’t even imagine. The lessons you learn along the way will shape you, strengthen you, and inspire the person you eventually become.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
The ideas I rely on most, beyond my own, come from my husband. We’re very much one and the same, yet we think both differently and similarly in the best ways. He offers perspectives that challenge me, balance me, and push me to see things from angles I might not have considered. He’s my whole heart, my sounding board, and the person I admire most.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Today, I’m focused on building a strong foundation for my business, one that can withstand the bumps, struggles, and inevitable challenges that come with growth. I’m learning not to let the small things shake me and instead investing my energy into long-term stability, resilience, and intention. My hope is that over the next 7–10 years, I’ll continue to strengthen that foundation as I grow, learn, and strive for something even better.
