Teaira Leslie of Buffalo on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Teaira Leslie . Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Teaira , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, I’ve been finding a lot of joy in spending intentional time with my son and creating little adventures together. Whether it’s exploring new restaurants, taking short weekend trips, or simply having cozy moments at home, I’ve been embracing experiences that make memories. I’ve also been focusing on my personal growth—mentally, emotionally, and physically—which has been refreshing and grounding outside of my work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Teaira, and I am the founder of Waist Talk Fitness, an all-women’s gym dedicated to helping women feel strong, confident, and empowered—inside and out. My brand is built on creating a safe, encouraging space for women to prioritize their health while building a supportive community. Beyond fitness, I’m passionate about curating events like the Boss Brunch and Black Market Business Ceremony, which celebrate leadership, entrepreneurship, and Black-owned businesses. Right now, I’m focused on expanding Waist Talk Fitness through unique programs, challenges, and collaborations that inspire women to push past limits and create lasting lifestyle changes. For me, it’s not just about workouts—it’s about building legacy through leadership, wellness, and community impact.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped how I see the world was becoming a mother. It completely shifted my perspective on what truly matters—teaching me patience, resilience, and the importance of creating a life filled with purpose. It made me more intentional about my time, my energy, and the legacy I’m building, not just for myself, but for my son. It also reminded me that success isn’t just about achievements—it’s about impact, balance, and being present for the people and moments that matter most.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there was a point where I almost walked away from my business and everything I was building. Balancing motherhood, entrepreneurship, and my own personal struggles felt overwhelming, and I questioned if I could keep going. But I reminded myself why I started—to create a safe space for women, to inspire others through my own journey, and to build a future for my son. I leaned on my faith, my support system, and the discipline I’ve built over the years. That season taught me that even when you feel like you have nothing left, showing up for yourself in small ways can reignite your fire.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say what really matters to me is my family, my faith, and making a meaningful impact on others. They know I care deeply about building legacy—whether that’s through raising my son, empowering women in my community, or creating spaces where people feel seen and supported. They’d also say I value authenticity and growth, because I’m always encouraging the people around me to push past their comfort zones and become the best versions of themselves.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I lived with purpose and poured into others. That I was a woman who loved deeply, inspired change, and left every space better than I found it. That I empowered women to see their worth, pushed people to chase their dreams, and built a legacy my son could be proud of. I want my story to be one of strength, resilience, and love—a reminder that no matter what life throws at you, you can rise, and you can help others rise with you.
