Terry Tyus on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Terry Tyus and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Terry, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something out of work that is bringing me joy lately has usually been anime going to the movies, shopping and traveling

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Terry. My business name is nerds. My business is RapNerdz. I am a film director. I make short films music videos. I’m also a photographer as well. I do portrait, events, sports photos, and more. I’ve been working on a upcoming film that should be in the theaters but will start out in small indie film soon it is coming out between 2025 and 2026 be on the lookout.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I think the part of me that served its purpose already was me doing small music videos small events, small concerts anything that was really small compared to a big scale like I’ve done recently like boxing matches at MGM tours certain things in that nature

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve been doing photography videography for 10 years so there’s been gaps in between where I thought about giving up some years. I will give it a break for a year just so I can figure out what I wanted to do next at my career going on for five years or more. Any business gets discouraging specially when you start from the beginning from zero, sometimes you could be doing it for 20 years. I still get discouraged, depending on how things are going in life so all I can really tell people is to keep going.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie in the industry that I am in currently is that everybody is your friend everybody really isn’t your friend just treat them as associates and coworkers and clients because once I start getting into friendship wise, it gets a little hard to detach from that so I would say That’s the biggest lie in the industry that everybody is your friend in the industry and they want to help you and I want you to go to another level with them when sometimes they don’t even want that for themselves and they don’t want you at that certain level either

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew, I had 10 more years left or I know I’m going to still do this for 10 more years. What I will stop doing immediately is just giving people way too much leeway on certain things when it comes to the prices and my business I would be more on top of things and more treating people more as my clients and making sure that they are on a client level to where they know like certain things they can’t cross or can’t do when it comes to my photography videography business so if I had to stop doing anything pretty much, it would just be giving people too much leeway in my business
